Yeah, we should have signed more, no two ways around it.

Arizona still had the poorest use of resources I've ever seen under the current system.

39 picks this year, so, 21 of 39 or 22 or 39? I count 21 in page one. Did they sign a 22nd guy not mentioned?

to me, it's more about the dollars than the number signed. If they spent in the 5% range over budget, then they put all they could into the draft. You can question the overpays, but to me, that shows they're committed to spending if they go over budget. . . . granted, final numbers are usually not available, so we may never know.

It is completely unexcuseble that they may have left $160k on the table despite no number 1 pick. There is absolutely no reason they couldn'y have taken the 160k plus the 100k slot and added up to the 5% to sign 2 guys at nearly 300k each or at least one at almost 600k

Yes, meant 21 out of 39. Same point. The issue is that they "play the game" and squirrel away some money by taking a college senior such as Kazmarski in the 8th rd, but then end up not using the leverage gained from it. And then they compound the problem by burying Kazmarski in the Appy league when he's already 23!

Moreover, they signed a total of 7 position players! 7! 3 OFers, 1 3Bman, 1 2Bman, and 2 Catchers. That's it. And 14 arms. And people wonder why they don't ever develop adequate position players... How can you when you draft predominantly pitchers year after year? To be fair, that's down from the past few years from around 11 or 12 but this year was especially poor. Just 21 players signed?! Just 7 position players?! I really don't like that math.

Just to play devil's advocate, do we know they underspent by $160K? Not all the numbers were reported.

Who else could have signed for above slot? Shaw, Torres, and Bautista were all confirmed to get $100K or less.

Only one I could possibly see is Siena.

I was thinking Torres, but I hadn't checked. You're right, if they all signed for $100 K or less, it's hard to figure.

I think that has more to do with not having to fill short season rosters. Generally, a lot of position players taken on the third day are just taken to fill a roster spot on Brooklyn on Kingsport. But this year, we didn't have the need for such players. We even had to place polished college players like Mazeika and Kaczmarski in Kingsport.
