The #1 pitching and likely prospect in the draft was just ruled ineligible by NJ after transferring back from IMG Academy in Florida. This was just days after he threw a 19 K no hitter. Groome is the best pitcher to come out of NJ since Al Leiter and it's sad he's not able to pitch because adults screwed up again.

So he can sit back, put his feet up, and in about 2 months be $7M richer.

Poor baby.

Haha point taken but it's not always about money.

And turns out, he misses 12 games or 39 days, whichever is less.

Seems that the rule was pretty straight forward, unless I'm missing something. Did he not know? Did his coaches not know? Did his new coach know but pitched him anyway? I suppose I could read up on it a bit more. Why did he switch schools? Anyone who's followed Andrew Church knows that switching schools messes with eligibility.

I'm OK with this being a kid is being punished cause he didn't know the complicated and unfair rules, but I'm not convinced this is that. Am I missing anything? Being too harsh? Wouldn't one of the first questions of a top prospect be, when switching HS, "what are the eligibility rules if I switch?"

and, I've always loved a good underdog story. Go Mets (2018).

Totally insignificant. The kid has been seen as a top of the 1st round talent for the past 3 or 4 yrs. This is nothing but a blip on the radar.

WIth some other nice arms already arrived or close, Groome should help set the Phils up nicely to get back into contention fairly quickly.

He did absolutely nothing but Bobby Brownlie was a HUGE prospect coming out of Rutgers.

Apparently he switched schools because he wanted to come home and play his senior year with his childhood friends. Seems like a technicality of the rules but he shouldn't miss more than a few starts. Maybe a good time to schedule visits with some of the teams at the top of the draft

As someone who attended boarding school, this strikes me as a trash rule.
