He's a top of the order OFer who got on base nearly half his PAs this season. That's interesting to me.

But he doesn't even have speed. I feel like these high OBP types without speed or power rarely actually end up that once they face better pitching. I watched video of him and he looked unusually puny to the point I see little to no chance he grows into any real power (even average gap power) (http://www.thestate.com/sports/college/ ... SCMizz_007). He's one of the thinnest college players I recall the Mets taking. He's 6'0 175 or roughly 30 pounds lighter than David Wright or Curtis Granderson's listed weights, it's one thing if he had plus speed but he doesn't.

He's a 10th rd pick, Metro. I said he's interesting. Interesting means some potential. If you think he has no potential, so be it. We all see different things. It all remains the be seen on the field.'

He's likely to end up sucking. I make no guarantees bro. Could be I'm just overly excited to have a few college position players in the org we didn't have a week ago... :D

I don't see a single OF we took that has even a 10% chance of being an MLB starter. If I'm wrong it will be here in writing. I'm obviously not rooting for him to fail.

* If they shock and sign Cortes or someone like Alonso ends up in the OF I want it noted I did not mean them.

ML starting OFer?? I don't think you're going out on a limb there... they didn't pick an OFer in their first 10 picks.

btw, I think they could try Tiberi in LF, but for now it seems like they are going to keep at 3B.

And I will tell you that from the few clips I saw, Ian Strom could play CF in the majors right now.

In fairness tho, I really like Zanon from what I saw. There's one that could slip thru.

Well if you are saying maybe Cone one day is a big leaguer then sure any of these guys could be and he hit pretty well at a D1 school so he has a shot. I just don't see anything that stands out and he's already 22 so I don't see any future physical growth on the horizon. I keep repeating myself but if he had speed I'd be far more intrigued. More likely to stay in CF and more likely to be a top of the order threat.

To be fair there are only 5 of them, and they aren't going to sign Cortes, but I don't see any of these guys getting out of the Sally League.

How many guys make the bigs after hitting .230 their junior year of college? He could be Griffey in CF he's going to have to hit... career .678 OPS in college with 2 career homers. I don't doubt he can pick it but if he's MDD 2.0 then it would be an upset to me. In fact, I could see him being one of those guys who doesn't hit and then 3 years from now tries pitching again.

And to be clear, if Tiberi ends up in LF I'm obviously not counting him. I like Zanon as a sleeper 14 homers, 27 steals.

There is no need to take what I said out of context. I know full well that Strom has a mountain to climb and still may not get past A+. I just wanted to throw you a bone regarding his defense. At least he has one ++ tool.

I've been trying not to rely solely on stat scouting wrt these picks.

I like Zanon's odds to make it to AA at the very least.

I agree, after reading up on Zanon, he looks potentially a little interesting. Was surprised to hear he's starting in Brooklyn. Their OF is getting crowded, unless Berrios gets held back.

Metro, on Cone, BA had him at #310. How many #310 guys have ever made it to the majors (if someone can look that up with success, props to them). An average draft, maybe 25 guys see major league time, so the guy ranked #310 is pretty far down on the list.

Still, what Cone has is the most important skill. He puts the bat on the ball. So he's skinny, he can work out. Dom Smith can teach him how to eat.

From BA:

Quote:
Cone exploded this spring, establishing himself as one of the most consistent hitters in the SEC and in the country. The outfielder set a school record with a 31-game hitting streak, coming in the heart of SEC play, and he was batting .357/.467/.500 as of early June. Those numbers may very well catch the eye of more statistically inclined draft evaluators, as Cone's raw tools don't stand out. At 6 feet, 170 pounds, he's not a physical specimen. An average runner, Cone was displaced in center field by teammate Dom Thompson-Williams late in the season and is more suited for left than right. Cone has obvious feel for the barrel

Also, 10th round picks are usually underslots, so, we'll see how that works out.
