Per his brother, Kay will not pitch this year.

More than "Red flag" they failed him. The plan was never to give Planck that offer. Kay's issue caused them
To pivot which is why Kay got as much as he did despite a legit elbow issue

If it was known before the draft that Kay had this injury, he would probably have still gone in the first three rounds, so it's not like we just wasted money on him or something.

We could've done this differently, no?

Physical a while ago, and then offer Kay like 500k or 650k? What would his other option have been?

I believe you have to offer at least 40% of slot in order to get a compensation pick the next year for not signing a pick. That's a bit less than $800,000 in this case.

There's no injury clause in that?

So we could've "saved" an additional 325k or so... might've been worth it.

I'm talking about this offhand here, but I do not believe so. After Brady Aiken failed his physical the Astros offered him exactly 40%.

A broken Anthony Kay is still an early round prospect. If all teams knew about this going in, he still probably would have gone in round 2 or 3. A value of $1.1 million falls between the slot amounts for the 58th and 59th picks.

Right, and we know the Mets liked him, so if you are not happy with taking Kay at 31, think the decision tree is would you rather have:

- Kay, Alonso, Planck OR
- BPA at 31, Kay, 100K HSer (or a guy you would've drafted/not signed in 11th)

They could have still taken Alonso round 2 in that scenario. The simple question is what they got with their round 31 money: Kay/Planck vs BPA for 2.1 million, or combo of players for that amount.

I don't follow the draft as close as some, but I think Kay/Planck is a respectable pickup for 2.1 million. Not necessarily a hit the ball out of the park homer, but a 2 solid arms.

Anthony Kay was a consensus top 30ish talent. He's not lasting til the Mets 3rd round pick, 100 overall over a maybe injury...and if he did we would've had to blow our draft budget there, no?

The Mets were all over him. If you want to say they shouldn't have popped him at 30, have to assume he gets popped at 64 (if he's even there).

I didn't say he would have. It was more just along the lines, who do you want, Consensus #31 or Kay & Planck. It seems a simpler way to do the comparison than putting Kay at 64, but there's no right way to draw comparison scenarios.

To me, it's simply a matter of Other Player X at 31, no Kay and no Planck. And depending on whom that 31 player is, losing out on a damaged Kay and Planck could be worth it. Still sorry they lost out on one of the Cs. And I very much also wanted an OFer.
