Woodmansee has anchored the Sun Devil offense for the last two seasons, progressively improving both at the plate and in the field during his time as ASU's starting shortstop. While not flashy, he's a solid middle infielder capable of playing above his tools. He's a slightly below-average runner but is athletic and makes the plays at shortstop. His feet have shown increased quickness during his junior season and he projects to be at least an average defender with an average or better arm. He can stay at shortstop for now, but if he grows out of his 6-foot-3, 192 pound frame he's athletic enough to handle other positions. At the plate Woodmansee's swing has a good bat path, allowing him to get to inside pitches. He's a disciplined hitter who strikes out in only 13 percent of his plate appearances and draws nearly as many walks as strikeouts. He has good bat speed and above-average raw power. Woodmansee projects to go off the boards in the top five rounds.

A Phoenix area native who stayed home to attend Arizona State, Woodmansee has been the Sun Devils' starting shortstop for two-plus years, with a solid track record to show for it. It's unclear exactly where he profiles, but college position players who perform well for major programs tend to do well come Draft time.

There are definitely some Woodmansee supporters in the scouting industry. Tall and lanky, he has shown some ability with the bat. He has some power to left, though the right-handed hitter can get a little pull happy as a result. A fringy runner, at best, he might not have the range to stay at shortstop long-term. If he has to move to third, then the question becomes about if he'll grow into enough power to profile at the infield corner.

At worst, Woodmansee could be a valuable utility type with some feel to hit. A team that believes he has the tools to stick as an everyday shortstop might be the one to take him in the first few rounds.

Colby Woodmansee is my highest rated signable player left at 67, Kyle Cody of Kentucky at 99 my only other college player left

There goes the top college player on my board, really like this pick for the Mets. I think a chance he could play SS with power

Even if Woodmansee moves chance for power at SS or 2B

Colby Woodmansee is steal in fifth round for #NYMets, has chance to stick at SS and bat plays up - nice future bench piece w/ avg potential

Woodmansee seems like a strong value pick here. 6th college player or not. #Mets

ESPN #78 (one spot ahead of Alonso)

Quote:
Woodmansee started his sophomore season off hot and had some supplemental round buzz at that time. His stock has fallen a bit since then but teams are still very interested in his velvety smooth defensive actions and above-average pull power.

Woodmansee has terrific defensive footwork, clean actions and plenty of arm for the left side of the infield. He absolutely looks the part of a solid and valuable defensive shortstop during infield drills. What Woodmansee lacks is the objectively measured straight line speed that most big league shortstops possess. Woodmansee is routinely down the line in 4.4 seconds or more, making him no better than a 40 runner on the 20-80 scale. There are shortstops, like Asdrubal Cabrera or Jhonny Peralta, who have made a career of playing at short despite a lack of straight-line speed and range. It's possible for Woodmansee to follow suit.

If Woodmansee does have to move off of short then he'll have to hit. He has above-average raw power but a grooved swing and struggles to whack anything that's not gift-wrapped into his bat path. If he can stay at short and become even a 40 hitter with that power, he's a big leaguer. In a draft bereft of middle infield talent, he might be targeted fairly early by a team with a liberal definition of what constitutes a viable defensive shortstop.

Seems like very good value for a 5th round pick

Colby Woodmansee, smooth defender, plus arm but a 4 runner and I don't think it works at SS. 30 present hit, swing is grooved, has power.

Now, as I note in the full thread, most of us wouldn't know what to do with look-sees at this guy and thats me included. And I'm always inclined not to go too hard against these middle round guys because I presume scouts know more than me, and these are just scouts' picks.

But the video mlb.com has of him - that has to be the slowest bat speed I've ever seen on one of these draft videos. Is the tape speed off maybe? All of the reports like his bat, so this could be another case of me just not knowing what I'm seeing.
