In the words of R Nitelight, if you're going to fail, you might as well fail spectacularly. Or something like that.

This is more like it. If they can "fix" him, this pick has upside.

Didn't Randy Johnson have some pretty spectacular control issues in his younger years? Essentially this is the same situation. The Mets just drafted the next Randy Johnson.

His release point is all over the place in his MLB.com video.

Why is this guy better than Conor Buchmann?

Chris Viall, RHP, Stanford

"This is as big a stuff -- fastball velocity, fastball movement, breaking ball -- as you will find in the draft," Tanous said. "His command has been off this past year. We felt like this was a really good chance at a really good spot, the sixth round, to take a shot at somebody. I'm a firm believer that at certain points in the draft -- and it may be in the 15th round, it may be in the sixth or seventh -- but you have to take a shot at some big upside. Viall probably has the biggest upside that we took. ... Chris Viall just has such enormous stuff. Once we get some command and control with him, I think he's a guy who is going to move up in the system really quickly."

I will say this seems very pie in the sky but the one place in the org where they walk the walk is developing pitchers, so I won't knock this yet. Long odds tho.

And btw, when are they going to go for big upside on an OFer..?

If they're going to waste a pick, may as well waste a pick on a 6'9 guy who throws 95. Easy to root for this guy. :D

That's fine, I like him better anyway.
