This goes against what I usually like and what I generally look for in a prospect, but I think my favorite prospect we took outside of the first round is Blake Tiberi. Granted, I don't know too much about a lot of the high school guys we took today, but Tiberi just screams Daniel Murphy to me.

Playing at a major program I expect him to be more polished than Murphy and stay at 3B but we'll see. He was someone I definitely had some interest in so this I like the pick.
On the whole, they did their usual playing it safe so there were very few picks to get excited about and obviously I think they could have done better in the 4th and 5th rds when there still a lot of interesting players on the board. And could they not have gone with a local kid like Bakst or Laskey or maybe take a shot on Tuck with one of these late picks??

Eh, Bakst is a lock to go to Stanford, so whatever.
I think we sign 6-8 prep arms and 0-1 prep bats from this draft. Pretty clear what our focus was.

Honestly I don't really see why everyone is so down on it. Obviously could've been more upside picks but overall my first impression is they did a decent job. Restocked the pitching depth with Dunn and Kay, took some interesting upside arms. I like Alonso. Seems like he can really hit and apparently with power. I'm a fan of Tiberi, definitely a guy I'll root for. Seems like he's doing his best to stick at 3b. Paez has some pop and seems interesting. I think we took plenty of interesting players and did a decent job restocking the system. I see plenty of guys that can be MLB contributors.

I do wonder if they took Tiberi with the sole intent of giving him Murphy's adjustments and seeing if it takes.

I find this talk about Kelenic comical. He's a 19 year old kid who hit .253 at Kingsport and struck out once a game and people are talking like he's the second coming. Get real people. When you have a chance to get the best reliever in the game who's only 24 and give up Kelenic in the deal, you MAKE that deal. Stop with the nonsense.

It's just the nature of the draft and I'm, admittedly, one to get discouraged as well.
I used to write NBA draft reports for a site/blog in the late 90's early 2000's and would love writing Mets prospect rankings as well during that time.
But after a few years I realized it's such a crapshoot trying to figure out who did well and who will become X,Y,Z that I stopped and preferred to step back and just read what the multitude of writers have to say as well as the fans.
It's why I have the sig (from MJ).
Would be interesting though if they went back to the hitting program they had for college bats during the Minaya era. Looking for players with strong wrists, 2-strike approach/fouling off pitches etc., seemed to work for a 3 year period where most of our college draftees seemed to do so well, pre-Sandy/Depo: Thole/Murphy/KirkN/Duda/Ratliff.
And we have the same Org. Hitting instructor as we had then.

Yeah, and if you're using the "He's 19" logic, then I guess the best report a scout could give us is:
"I have no idea. He's a teenager. He may go through 5 arm surgeries between now and his 30th birthday. He may add a pitch. He may lose a pitch. He may put on 30 lbs and add velocity. He may put on 50 lbs and eat his way out of the league. I literally have no idea what he is going to be."
But thats not what these guys are paid to do, nor what we are looking for them to do, right?
