They had us taking Will Craig last year and that didn't happen. Mets were reportedly happy that Dunn was still on board, they weren't sure he would be. I'm sure they also liked Blake Rutherford who went 1 spot before.

And, granted, I've only seen 30 seconds of video of Burger, but I don't get it. He looks too stocky (aka slow) and I don't see bat speed unless he was just taking it easy in the video. He doesn't look fluid to me the way Peter Alonso did when I saw some video of Alonso. Not buying Burger and not just because it's the 2nd time they've gone with the Wright-replacement angle.

That said, it's a long ways away. Lots can change between now and then.

I will spend the next three months praying MacKenzie Gore falls to 20.

Interesting. Nice numbers. Bit of a speed/glove/batting average type.

Does anyone know why he didn't enter the draft after his Jr year? Did he want to finish college first?

He's a junior now.

Oops. I should have caught that.

I'm just going off stats but I think I like this guy. He was #2 on his team in slugging in the cap cod league, #3 in homers. Don't think he's a stud or anything but for where the mets pick I feel OK about him.

I didn't like Will Craig at all, who the mets were tied to last year and went #22.

Geez, I was looking at him as a guy you save money on in the 4th Round.

At 20 my head would explode.

You had be going for a bit, but BA came out with an article yesterday and they currently have him at #24

http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/20 ... 1kIrxTw.97

Now, I'm the first to admit, I don't know diddly about the draft. I just go on first impressions, but hek - people operate on first impressions all the time, so it's not like I'm the only one who does it. Professional scouts and the guys who draft these players or write articles about them should dig deeper - I don't.

But I like plus glove batting average types. I like Dom Smith for that reason, I'm not as concerned about his power. If Dom hits .290-.310 with 10-14 homers and a good glove. I'll be happy to have him replace Duda. Those numbers work for me. (Nighty would probably be happy to have 1962 Marv Throneberry replace Duda . . . but I digress).

"Safe" first rounders makes people think of Cecchini, and I get that. "Safe" means, low ceiling, which means boring, which means - lousy pick . . . but . . . I still kinda like this guy (first impression) and I don't hate him at #20. Maybe shave $250-$350 K off his slot, like they did Cecchini, but, I'm OK with drafting him. I'm less of a fan of Berger cause he looks like a first baseman to me, not a 3rd baseman and I don't love his swing.

Some poor man's Dansby Swanson here. All things being equal I prefer this year's approach to previous years, especially with this year's depth of college arms. Get the best mix of upside, experience, and production with that first pick, and go from there.

Kind of off topic, but that's what people disliked most about the Cecchini pick.

"Safe" should be a college performer who you know can handle and do certain things and that you're confident will be a MLB contributor in some capacity.

A "safe" HS kid doesn't compute b/c they have not proven they can handle certain competition and you cannot project if they will ever be a MLB player.

HS picks in the 1st round should be about a player's ceiling and the balance between that potential upside and the probability of the outcome.

Yeah, and if you're using the "He's 19" logic, then I guess the best report a scout could give us is:

"I have no idea. He's a teenager. He may go through 5 arm surgeries between now and his 30th birthday. He may add a pitch. He may lose a pitch. He may put on 30 lbs and add velocity. He may put on 50 lbs and eat his way out of the league. I literally have no idea what he is going to be."

But thats not what these guys are paid to do, nor what we are looking for them to do, right?

At the top of the draft you should be great at something.

This is why I like gettin a guy like Dunn. I bet there is a surprising number of Kohl Stewarts, Taylor Guerreris, Beau Burrows, Tyler Koleks etc etc etc who no matter how high octane their stuff might be coming out of HS, you don't even know how their game will project to striking people out at higher levels...... let alone every other thing young pitchers have to master to really make it big.

Note- not saying these guys listed above can't be big deals, but being able to get yourself out of trouble is so big, its something I want to know has been flashed at as high a level as possible when talking first round investment.
