Mets draft 20, 59 and 97.

Top pick - best player available. That's kinda what most people want.

Pick 59 or pick 97 - would you draft a catcher? It's the toughest spot to fill and BA lists a number of catchers in their top 100.

BA's top 100 has catchers at 46, 53 (C/3B/RHP), 68, 77, 81, 83, 86 and 95.

Is this a good year for the mets to go high on a catcher with pick 59 or 97?

last time they did that was Plawecki 2012 and before then, Blake Forsythe 2010. Catchers tend to be high risk. At the same time, it's the hardest spot to fill.

Catcher with pick 2 or 3 this year? Yea or Na?

I'd almost never take a catcher first two rounds unless extra picks. So very rarely do you get a perfect payoff (even extending to the fact if a guy was TOO good I'd never want his bat being limited to 130 games). Three best blend of options IMO, 1. Draft the intriguing juco bats that end up free falling until someone thinks they can get the glove to catch up to the bat. 2. Sign big arm Latin athletes and let them call games from the time they are in the minor league cradle. 3. Do what you do well and develop to your strengths so you can allocate prospects or cash to positions that you don't have the best record at

Seth Romero, a guy projected right around #10 in the draft, suspended from Houston... again. Last year, Jason Groome fell about 10 picks while being an all-around douche by most reports. Delvin Perez fell about 20 for getting nailed for PEDs.

If Romero is there for the Mets, what do you do?

Part of me says, if you can add an advanced lefty to our group of arms in the minors, you do whatever you have to. But that would be too easy. I haven't seen exactly the reason he was kicked off, but even if we are just assuming attitude or lack of any sort of hustle, this is still a kid with major projected conditioning problems, and one that doesn't seem like an underslot sign if he's still getting talked about as a first round guy.

Blake Rutherford dropped a few spots last year but that might have just been money demands if I remember right.

Think that was just money related. He was on the shortlist of potential #1 picks early in the process, but then started to fall back as others emerged and teams got worried about the fact he was like a year older than most the class. The Yankees got a great player at that spot, but also spent almost a million more than the Mets did on Dunn, and thus had to use most of their remaining picks on organizational depth and high floor guys. Which is all part of why I think the MLB is head and shoulders above any other draft when it comes to fascinating twists and turns.

It's a little more complicated than that but yeah. Talent wise, he was better than 18 but money/agent stuff is why he made it that far. It was mostly by design.

Love the upside, love the character (from small blurbs albeit), hate the positioning we are in if we want him. He's perfect for that Taylor trammell role of tooled up HS, taken by a team like the reds last year, who could grab him with an early second round pick and afford the bonus and the risk.

Metro, is it me, or are we seeing a lot of area kids (NY/LI/NJ/Conn etc.) the past decade+ that are really good baseball prospects compared to past decades?

There wasn't much to get excited about around here IIRC, other than Manny which was 27 yrs ago now and the occasional Johnnie (or maybe Seton Hall kid) that became a good pro.

But in the recent past there have been tons on blue chip baseball prospects from the greater NY area.

Or at least it seems that way to me...

Yeah, and if you're using the "He's 19" logic, then I guess the best report a scout could give us is:

"I have no idea. He's a teenager. He may go through 5 arm surgeries between now and his 30th birthday. He may add a pitch. He may lose a pitch. He may put on 30 lbs and add velocity. He may put on 50 lbs and eat his way out of the league. I literally have no idea what he is going to be."

But thats not what these guys are paid to do, nor what we are looking for them to do, right?
