Need is the entire reason you have the draft.

You draft for it.

You don't reach for it.

I'm curious how much Burger's talent might play up on draft day given the team's situation. Still no blue-chip third base prospect anywhere near ready, lack of plus-power within the system, and a large volume of major league ABs that will most likely be moving on over the next two years.

You don't draft for need.

I think some of the time you draft for need. Maybe not day 1, but day 2 - sure. Why not address some projected holes.

Taking him over Burger and Ramos would be a disappointment.

Yea, not feelin it with Hiura, some team is going to get a great lottery ticket in him... and I do like the contact with authority that he brings..... but we just seem to already have a lot of tweeners round these parts the last few years.

Watched most of the Faedo vs Schmidt matchup last night. As one would expect, the bats were rather silent, but I think that has more to do with poor plate appearances than it does these guys dominating all night.

Faedo had a great final line, but if his stuff doesn't tick back up to last year's levels I think he might end up the most over-selected pitcher in this draft. Just don't think he has the command to become this guy that needs spots 91MPH sinkers all game to set up 94 high and tight, as well as the plethora of sliders he throws. Last year I was thinking a bigger, healthier Vince Velasquez..... this year I'm thinking about the long road Rick Porcello took to stardom, and that's if things go well.... with Mike Pelfrey being the floor.

Schmidt I like a lot, but he seemed gassed after the first (short rest for both, seeing as it was a Thursday game?), he failed to get on top of every offspeed pitch from that point on. Wouldn't surprise me if he ends up one of those prospects that comes back from his first pro-offseason with a lot of additional muscle thickness in an attempt to hold his velocity better. If so, think the return is a rather safe Dylan Bundy-esque middle of the rotation starter that has good stuff, but even better intangibles.

To be fair, Porcello probably wouldn't have taken such a long road to stardom if the Tigers hadn't put him on such a short road to the majors. The guy was seriously rushed and likely would have come up as a much more finished product if he'd been in an organization like today's Mets or the Rays of the last decade.

McKay hit 4 HRs yesterday. Manuel has the Twins taking him with the #1 pick, tho he says as a P.

Vientos and Burger remain realistic and interesting targets on the left side. Vientos seems our type of asset, and is growing on me. Potential hit-first player with longterm power to gradually grow into, who sounds like he has been making strides in convincing people he can stay at SS for a few years of a Big League career. Also appears to be winning the war of attrition by steadily performing from last summer through this spring. Unless he completely busts, a Wilmer-like floor isn't bad, with a lot more left in the tank to dream on. Big upside, and continues our strategy of stocking middle infielders and letting things work themselves out.

Burger I've also warmed on... didn't hurt watching him crush a ball last night against Mizzou. I didn't see the whole game, so no individual plays really stick out to me, but overall thought he was bouncier around the bag (and physically slimmer) than I expected.

Yes on Vientos. Also like McConnell, Hiura, and Garrett Mitchell who reminds me a lot of Brett Gardner.

I still like McConnell as well, but see him as another great second round lottery ticket, seems he's been severely inconsistent since last summer

Shame on me for not realizing he was a draft eligible soph, unless tonight's announcers were full of crap, but I've been falling in love with Blaine Knight of Arkansas with an eye towards next year. He's been just shaky enough lately to suppress his rise a bit if he is eligible, but if you like the idea of pushing the chips in on a little bit of a reach for the chance to get a guy that could rise to a top-3 the following year, then this might be your dude.
