The Mets strategy clearly changed when Vientos was available for their second pick. I'm guessing he is way over slot, forcing the Mets to draft all those seniors on day 2. The Braves, albeit positioned differently in the draft, took prep guys in rounds 2 and 3 and then took 6 seniors in a row to close day 2.

One guy shouldn't impact the entire class like that.

You want a strong overall class.

Who was the last drafted senior that made an impact for us?

Den friggin' Decker?

And we surely bore you with the retelling of Mr. Rivera's days of glory while playing at Troy.

What exactly do you like about this class?

The fact that the Cyclones should be one of the most experienced and favorite teams?

When you have the chance to walk away with one more first round caliber player than you had first round picks, it's automatically a B draft. Add two or three seasoned college picks that have physical ability to translate to the show and it's a B+. Really the only thing keeping ths from being an A draft will be can we get any of the post-10th HS to sign.

You can't compare this to drafts in other sports with a desire for immediate satisfaction. Hell, you can't even really compare us to a team in the top 3 or 4 picks because of the immense edge their signing pools give them in drafting big names late.

Fair summation.

No it's not, at all.

There is 40 friggin' rounds and you walk away with 2 prospects.

How is this in any shape or form a 'B' draft?

D. My grade. And that's with an assumption that they'll sign a couple of Day 3 prep guys (most of whom are old enough to be JUCO btw).

This is the equivalent of going BPA under the draft system we have in place.

I'm not going to count Labas, Van Eyk, or Eder in any of this since they're definitely not signing in the latter two cases and probably not in the first case.

Of the other guys, the first four picks and Hutchinson are all guys I've liked for a while. I think we got two legitimate first round prospects (one of which you could argue as a borderline top ten talent) and two legitimate third round prospects (Brodey and Dibrell). Hutchinson is a guy I'd be fine with as a 4th-5th round prospect or giving him that sort of money.

I didn't know much about Winaker before but he looks like an adequate pick, with the Stanford swing making my excitement more reserved than it would otherwise be (Brodey doesn't have as much of a Stanford swing). Renteria and Stajduhar are fine college picks as well, especially given that the former should save a good amount of money and the latter likely won't cost anything over $125k. I've liked watching Villines and Chafin in college as well and Trey Cobb is a name.

Don't really know who beyond round 16 is signing (college seniors aside), but we took a few intriguing projectable prep arms (including Peden) and should at least get a couple of them. Don't like Schneider's age but he has some standout tools and is worth spending a lottery ticket on.

The depth of arm in the system was...lacking, so this draft did a good job of replenishing that.

Well then I'd be left to believe your grading stinks. Likely due to a lack of understanding of the players that get drafted, the low success rate of players in the average draft, and strategies that might yield a successful class.

I'm pretty pleased overall but that's largely based off the first 5 picks. Whatever came after that is a crap shoot. There are a number of different ways they could have gone in rd 2, but I can't argue with taking Vientos there. Where I'd have probably deviated is rd 3. I'd have taken Whatley there. But I really like Brodey also, tho that's based on the hope he can play CF. He was someone I certainly had on my wishlist. So I guess I think they came up light at C (as usual) and I'd have liked to see a RHed hitting OFer, even if that's being nitpicky.

I hate our draft every year. But then when I look around I see that unless you're in the Top 10 or have multiple picks most teams drafts look a lot like ours.

It's really not the Mets. It's all on MLB for setting up a system that sucks all the excitement out of what should be an exciting event.

My top 10 picks (emphasis on value):

1. Bryce Hutchinson
2. Mark Vientos
3. Tony Dibrell
4. David Peterson
5. Nate Peden
6. Marcel Renteria
7. Quinn Brodey
8. Jack Schneider
9. Carl Stajduhar
10. Matt Winaker

Obviously, Labas and van Eyk would be on the list, but they ain't signing.

There's a lot of good prep guys that aren't signing.
