Looks like they saved 561,600 total on these signings if my math is correct.

Yes, your math is correct.

That means they are $189,400 under with Peterson, Brodey, Winaker, and Renteria still pending. Think those four will save an additional $150,000-600,000.

Van Eyk is not happening and obviously Eder isn't either. I think they sign Hutchinson, Schneider, and Flores. Labas is TBD. McWilliams and Taylor too.

Those last three might require digging into the additional $300,000 or so that the Mets are allowed to dig into.

If they sign Hutch too... Its a very good draft with high end talent

If Peterson and the 2 Stanford kids sign for slot, it looks like they have an extra $302K to throw around after rd 10 if I did the math right.

I think they will save some money there too. And they will have more than $300K in the 5% overage territory too.

I understand that logic, but it seems a terrible thing to do to a kid who has a chance of getting a fair contract somewhere else.

If your a GM you need to think of your organization first. The worst thing that can happen is you try to be a nice guy and bypass someone because you think you can't sign him and the Nationals or Yankees sign him and he becomes a thorn in your organizations side for the next 15 years.

Also, a lot of these kids and their parents are just greedy and try to take advantage of their kid having high school leverage. A lot of the guys getting picked in the 11th and 12th rounds are really 3rd, 4th or 5th round talents attempting to be paid like a first rounder.

No and this is not the way teams think either, thankfully.

Somehow I think if the Mets can go back in time and somehow block the Yanks from taking Jeter in the draft years ago they would do it. Even if it meant they couldn't sign him and Jeter would be forced to go to college for a few years.

That obviously wouldn't make sense since Jeter went sixth overall and if they had a top 5 pick they would take him and sign him in retrospect.

But still no. That's how you make enemies in the game, with other teams, agents, and future players. That's how you get blackballed. It's career/team suicide. It's just not how this industry works at all.

Also even if you ignore all that, 2000 World Series aside, wouldn't you be happy that he ended up on an AL team?

I was being sarcastic. Somewhat.

Do most teams really thing they are going to sign a no-go stud in the 37th round? Then why do they do so?

Yeah, I think there was a tad too much drama in this tangent. First, if a team really wanted a player, they wouldn't wait out 30+ rounds to call his name. But, otoh, I don't think a team is going to call a player's name in the 35th rd if they have no intention of speaking to his agent to gauge his price. But no, I don't think there is any blocking going on in the draft TBH. Teams are too busy worrying about their own team than to play defense in the draft.

I think there is a certain game theory principle in the draft, but I agree, the first 30 rounds are team based...either depth or lottery.

On the other hand, teams that have a tendency to cheat the parameters a bit can do well in later rounds...the 5% rule hasn't been used by the Mets I don't think...

The Mets used some of that 5% on Planck last year.
