#Rangers take Matt Whatley from @ORUBaseball - this is the best defensive catcher in the country

And I really liked his swing on top of that. But if he's better than Melendez, that is saying something, as Melendez resembles Benito Santiago or Pudge from video I saw.

I thought Matt Whatley had a real shot to be the first catcher drafted — scouts love the athleticism, catch & throw skills.

Another unsurprising comment:

“I would like to thank the New York Mets organization for giving me the opportunity to start my professional baseball career and to continue chasing my dreams,” Brodey said in a statement. “None of this would be possible without my family, friends, coaches and teammates who have supported, encouraged and pushed me along the way. I can’t wait to get started.”

I'd like to see them break from tradition and draft a stud in this round for a change. (Am I setting the bar too high?)

Joe Smith was the diamond baby here. Roger MCDowell.

But they could have signed Steve McQueen!

Signed for below slot (500k). Great value.

They should have tried to squeeze more savings out of him.

Yeah. I kind of shrug, but my offer certainly would have been on the lowball side.

Super. I have the feeling that Winaker could go over.

They should have tried to squeeze more savings out of him.

He's a Stanford guy and a legitimate third (or better) round talent. No reason to think he'd accept less.

If the Mets didn't agree to 500k, someone else almost certainly would have.

This is how high the Mets had to go to get him. And it's still strong value.
