Labas has been scouted often in his amateur career, playing on the same high school team as 2016 draft picks J.C. Flowers (Florida State) and Todd Lott (Louisiana Lafayette) as well as current teammate Austin Martin. Labas could end up being the best of the group. He has a durable 6-foot-3, 220-pound pitcher's body and a strong three-pitch mix. His fastball works mostly at 88-91 mph and touches 92 and 93 on occasion. His best offspeed pitch is his changeup; it's a low 80s weapon that disappears late, and Labas isn't afraid to double up on it as he locates it down and to both sides of the plate. He shows flashes with a slurvy upper 70s curveball, a potential near-average offering to play off his average fastball and above-average changeup. Labas's delivery isn't always in sync; he has a tendency to swing his hips open early and he loses deception as a result. He is, however, a quality athlete and could develop more strength and consistency as he matures and improves his conditioning. Labas is committed to North Florida.

Labas is a very mature pitcher in all senses of the description. Physically he looks like a budding college linebacker candidate, with solid musculature throughout and well balanced coordination. On the mound, he has very advanced command of three solid pitches, a rarity for a high school pitcher.

His signature outing this year was a heavily scouted no walk, 13 strikeout outing at the NHSI in late March. Labas worked at 88-92 mph the entire outing but his fastball was just one of his three weapons. His changeup was a plus pitch that he had extreme confidence in, tripling up on it once for a strikeout and showing big late life and deception on the pitch. Labas also showed lots of feel for his breaking ball, which varied from a slider to a curveball shape. Impressively, he threw 72 out of 92 pitches for strikes during the outing.

There isn't much projection in Labas' overall package as he's been working at about that velocity for two years and is physically mature. But his secondary pitches and command have taken big steps forward and he has a flawless performance and health history and the ability to pitch at an advanced level immediately, whether that be in college or professionally.

Any thoughts on the kind of money he's looking for? How strong is his college commit?

Wonder if this is part of the contigency if Vientos doesn't sign.

If Vientos doesn't sign, we lose his draft bonus pool allocation altogether. That wouldn't be good.

I know. But with the five seniors, they'd still have plenty of money to play around with today.

Sounds like a 3 at best. Not much projection left, 88-92. Even taking that at face value...

Kinda sounds like Jordan Humphries, though. Humphries didn't/doesn't have much projection left, but advanced pitchability

We lose it this year, but round 1 and 2 picks get returned a year later and a pick later, so Vientos (#59) becomes #60 in 2018. - that's not a big loss. Not signing a 3rd rounder is a much bigger loss than not signing a first or second.

Vientos also probably costs the mets a bunch of any extra slot money they have and added rounds 6-10. If they don't sign Vientos, they have a bunch of money to throw at these HS picks on day 3. If they do sign Vientos, they have a lot less and they won't sign as any HS picks.

It was fairly obvious that they'd go heavy on HS picks rounds 11-40 as a fall-back option.

Right, but if we are planning on going overslot to sign Vientos, that result would give us more money to spend than anticipated.
