I've also seen Alex Gordon as a comp. The tough thing with comps is, it's always tough to find two guys with the exact same skill set. People are using comps for the type of player, not the overall value. With Kelenic, he might have about as much speed as Nimmo, and shows good fielding instincts, but has a stronger arm, and will probably have more value as a plus defensive RF than as a CF. He's been 90mph off the mound as a pitcher.

As for the bat alone, if you want an optimistic comp, you might even think of a guy like Keith Hernandez. That's probably optimistic mainly on the plate discipline side, but it looks like he has that kind of hit tool and power together. And about that size, similar approach and swing, good pure hitter, strong arms and good bat speed. Maybe similar intensity as well.

Perhaps a more realistic comp might be Josh Reddick, with less raw power, but better discipline and approach, more of an all fields hitter. Might get to as much in game power.

Gimenez
Kelenic
Alonzo
Peterson
Dunn
Szapucki
Vientos

His hit tool and ability to play Center jumps him over Alonzo

Forgive the extrapolation but this implies that you think that a year from now Kelenic is roughly the 15th best player in the FSL. I get the euphoria around the draft, but this seems very aggressive to me.

I simply think he will be a better player then the others listed. I think a lot of people will be surprised how quick he moves. I guess a lack of power would be my only concern with him but I think that comes as well. I haven't liked a first round pick this much since Conforto.

From the other thread, but it's a better fit here

It's a 14 month difference. But as to Kelenic soon turning 19 and likely starting in K'port(?), I don't see how [some] people are automatically ranking this kid as top 5 in the system. That feels like an undersell of the talent in the system. For example, how would he jump Mauricio who is going to be in the GCL at 17?

For the record, I had Mauricio and Kelenic tied for #5 in my ranking, with Vientos a close #6. Mauricio and Kelenic feel similar to me ranking wise right now, both guys have legit upside and neither guy has played yet in the minors.

It's easy to name 3 guys who should be ranked ahead of Kelenic (Gimenez, Peterson, Alonso), it's tough to name 5. If you put Mauricio #4, Kelenic still feels like the obvious guy to put #5 right now, unless you really like Vientos, who I like, but I don't feel he's earned a ranking ahead of Kelenic yet, or Dunn, who had a nice game and is coming around, but I don't think he's really earned that kind of ranking either.

It's an aggressive ranking, but not necessarily wrong. I find it hard to accurately rank players who haven't played in the minors yet, so I lean conservative. First round picks get some leeway though.

Going on record that I really like this pick. Guy sounds like a gamer.

As expected, Waukesha’s Jarred Kelenic will sign with the #Mets and become a professional baseball player. He is still figuring out the financials in his contract, but he will sign for less than the slot of $5.5 million to get better player options.

What does this mean? I thought per the current CBA there isn't all that much flexibility in contracts.

It's from a video interview. The reporter doesn't seem to be particularly in tune with how it works. In the video Kelenic confirms he is going pro but the rest of the stuff is not said on camera so I think the reporter is just confused.
