Scout the player not the stat line.

I'm sure there are hundreds of guys hitting for a higher average throughout the NCAA, and the majority of them aren't going to get drafted, which Cortes was going to whether the Mets took him or not. There is a reason for that.

I think the concerns about his hitting ability being demonstrated by his batting average might be valid when you see he was not a high average hitter either season. He appears to be a short slugger type who has some power but with holes in his swing that might result in a low average type of guy. Maybe they can fix his hitting flaws without diminishing his power too much but I suspect his power numbers are coming at the sacrifice of being a better hitter.

You may be right. Every player has flaws, especially when you're getting outside the first and second round.

I just think the potential in his bat is worth the pick, especially for an organization that is sorely lacking in hitting prospects.

Amazin Ave says his arm is weak from both sides. Best position is 2nd. (Dan Uggla upside?)

An Uggla type is not a ridiculous comp. I think he could be a lot like Isan Diaz for a more contemporary comp. How bout a shorter Reese Havens, who also came out of South Carolina?

I'm not really a fan of Cortes but the SEC is about the same level as A+ so Cortes, if signed, might produce at the lower levels before probably falling off in AA/AAA.

Don't see much difference in the profile between him and Paez, and some here like Paez. Cortes is thicker and will be worse defensively but they're both low-average, high-power 2B, and Cortes' power is probably more reliable.

Pompey, Hernandez were interesting in this slot.

Pretty sure this was a Reese Havens reference.

Or Phillip Evans.

Pretty much any "doesn't have a specific position, 2B might be best fit" guy gets the "maybe convert him to catcher?" treatment.

It's about who they could have taken with this pick - Knight, Raleigh, Vavra, Palacios, Rooney, or even a prep like Ornelas or Liniak.

I like this pick

I think it’s very sabermetric.

He was a highly thought of HS player who in terms of OPS performed great for a freshman and sophomore

The k-bb rate looks very good

The average looks like an anomaly. If he came back for his JR year I would expect huge numbers all around.
