Let's say Baty at 3.7, Wolf at 1.7 and Allan at 3.0. That's $8.4m; Mets have $8.63m to play with with the non-penalty overage.
That's 250k for seniors rounds 4-10. Tough to do. Even cheaping out at $50k for a few makes it a close margin.
You could almost justify them going way over, and taking a hit on next year's draft because they got a first rounder in Allen.
I think they need to probably aim at $8m for the three, then they have a more doable 4-10.
Ironically, the seniors have a bit of leverage since they know if their slot disappears the Mets have less money to spend on the top 3...example, 4-5 have $500k slots
Thats way over. Why would they spend 40k per senior?

It's got to suck to be selected rounds 5-10 knowing you're going to get 10K or 1K, but if those guys were signed 11-40 they'd probably get a little more. Seems a little unfair.
Or am I overthinking it?
These are all likely agreed to beforehand. And last year the Mets gave all their seniors $10K who were drafted 11-40.

I find this talk about Kelenic comical. He's a 19 year old kid who hit .253 at Kingsport and struck out once a game and people are talking like he's the second coming. Get real people. When you have a chance to get the best reliever in the game who's only 24 and give up Kelenic in the deal, you MAKE that deal. Stop with the nonsense.

I think they should raise the slot values for rounds 4-10, and institute a minimum threshold draft bonus.
You get drafted rounds 1-10, you cannot be offered less than $50k. $25k at least for 11-40.
I'd not thought of that specifically but you're not wrong. The NBA has minimum draft amounts so there's precedent for it. Also, considering how badly minor leaguers are compensated, a minimum draft offer, scaling downwards with later picks, wouldn't be a bad idea.

But the NBA and MLB are not at all comparable, that includes the draft and what happens with the players in the years following.
Just seems to me you could protect the players a little bit and it wouldn't be that expensive.
No one forced them to go to college and graduate for sure, and they as seniors likely are not going to have a whole lot of leverage as sometimes marginal draftees. It just seems a tad gamed.

True, it's very different and first round picks are pretty much guaranteed a spot on the roster (cept for Frederick Weiss who Van Gundy hated from minute one).
But if a team selects a player (in baseball) and they get exclusive rights to him as a minor leaguer, I don't have a problem with a minimum signing bonus. They don't have to sign him, but lets say 10 grand for picks 31-40. 15 grand for picks 21-30. 20 grand for 16-20 and 25 grand for 11-15 with a 30 grand minimum in the first 10 rounds or 30, 32, 34, 37, 40, 50, 75, 100K for rounds 10-3. Rounds 1-2 already have rules in place.
Teams can still save money going underslot. But something like that I wouldn't object to.
