Let's say Baty at 3.7, Wolf at 1.7 and Allan at 3.0. That's $8.4m; Mets have $8.63m to play with with the non-penalty overage. That's 250k for seniors rounds 4-10. Tough to do. Even cheaping out at $50k for a few makes it a close margin. You could almost justify them going way over, and taking a hit on next year's draft because they got a first rounder in Allen. I think they need to probably aim at $8m for the three, then they have a more doable 4-10. Ironically, the seniors have a bit of leverage since they know if their slot disappears the Mets have less money to spend on the top 3...example, 4-5 have $500k slots |

I know if a team fails to sign a 1st rd pick they get a comp pick the next year. Is that the only round it's true for? |

This draft makes me think of a strategy to completely blow past the bonus pool if it would be worth it... Full Strategy: - Take the top ranked pick evey selection regardless of financial demands... This will give you 40 likely high quality picks... - Pay then what their worth... Yes this may end up costing 140M $ after the 100% penalty... - Incur the top penalty of loss of 2 future 1st round picks. (It’s likely you will have drafted atleast 4 or 5 1st Round Caliber Guys) - Have all these top quality prospects grow in your farm system at the same time getting them to the majors at roughly the same window of time... |

Typically they have to sign the #1 pick then all the rest fall into place. This year, they need to sign the #3 pick first, then #1 and #2. But unlike previous years, every pick after #3 can be signed for minor league minimum at almost any time. I suspect everyone who hasn't signed immediately is either in college playoff baseball, or just contingency picks that they will only sign if someone else opts out. |

If a team doesn't sign their first or 2nd rounder (but offers 40% of slot), they get compensated with a pick the year later, 1 pick lower. There's no compensation if they fail to sign their 3rd rounder, which makes signing him pretty important, cause a 3rd round pick isn't something they want to lose. |

Third round and second round signings are important more for the loss of slot money. If Baty signed bit Wolf and Allan did not, that's a whole lot of money that can't be used rounds 11-40. I guess that's why they picked some HSers in those as a hedge for any overage from Baty. Very high risk strategy, but in a miracle, could make it a watershed draft. |
