Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and six others died after a gunman opened fire at a public event on Saturday, the Pima County, Ariz., sheriff's office confirms. The 40-year-old Democrat was outside a Tucson grocery store when a gunman ran up and began firing indiscriminately. The suspect was taken into police custody.

The 40-year-old Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at a Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

UPDATE: She is in surgery, alive according to reports.

Eyewitness Account: http://gawker.com/5728501/

Quote:
The event was very informal: Gifford had set up a table outside the Safeway and about 20-30 people were gathered to talk to her. The gunman, who may have come from inside the Safeway, walked up and shot Gifford in the head first. According to Rayle, who is a former ER doctor, Gifford was able to move her hands after being shot.

After shooting Gifford, the gunman opened fire indiscriminately for a few seconds, firing 20-30 rounds and hitting a number of people, including a kid no older than 10 years old. Rayle hid behind a concrete pole and pretended to be dead. When the gunman apparently ran out of ammunition he attempted to flee, but a member of Gifford's staff tackled him. Rayle helped hold the gunman down while waiting for the sheriff to arrive, about 15-to-20 minutes later. The EMS came about 30 minutes later. Rayle said he was "stunned" by how long it took medical help to arrive.

The gunman was young, mid-to-late 20s, white, clean-shaven with short hair and wearing dark clothing and said nothing during the shooting or while being held down, although he struggled at first. He was "not particularly well-dressed"; he didn't look like a businessman, but more of a "fringe character," Rayle said. The sheriff's department arrived, arrested the gunman and cordoned off the parking lot.

A completely crazy dude. I'm reading right now that paranoia/schizophrenic behavior seems to develop in the late teens/early 20's.

When you've got Beck & Palin out there encouraging people to bring loaded weapons to political rallies, when you've got ads that target politicians with rifle crosshairs, is it any surprise some lunatic eventually does this. Sarah Palin has been trading in this type of anger and insanity for financial gain. She is a disgusting disgrace who has no concept of the personal responsibility that goes with being a public figure.

I'm not ready to go the Palin-TeaParty route until more details emerge, but sadly I would not be surprised if that's where this heads. Violence begets violence and violent rhetoric begets violence and failure to view and report upon violence in the appropriate context begets violence.

As a society, I think we have to stop pretending that when we are engaging in politics in this country, we are engaging in is this "other sort of thing." It is communication with a purpose, but should not come with a license to promote any form of anti-social behavior. The ends never justify the means.

Where it heads? It straight out is where it is and instead of hesitating it is important to take it there and discuss this, and stop this insanity which we have allowed for it's entertainment value. When we let the rhetoric to go to places where Beck & Palin have gone, of course the mentally ill will eventually respond. There are passages on the killer's youtube site which talks about government mind control. That's not the ramblings of a lunatic in a vacuum. When you have a VP candidate and candidate for President in 2012 try to represent the 1st Lady's campaign against childhood obesity and diabetes as actually being the Government controlling what we eat, as the Government saying we can't eat desert, is it any wonder that a lunatic would take that to Government mind control. Today's event is the fruit of that tree. Crosshairs on the representative, her opponent having his constituency come shoot an M-16 with him, Tea Partiers talking about shedding the blood of Patriots and encouraging people to bring guns to political events without any condemnation from their leaders? We don't need any more details to say this highlights exactly how dangerous, how irresponsible the actions of Fox News, Sarah Palin and her ilk has been.

What does it mean to say over and over again, publicly, "reload!" and "exercise your second amendment rights," and things like that? What does it mean to put crosshairs on congressional districts? (Palin and the right is now absurdly claiming that they weren't meant to be gun sights... which completely goes against their rhetoric and the factual record - it was published with a tweet saying " don't retreat, instead - RELOAD!").

The point, to me, is not whether or not using violence as a symbol for political difference and a group's motivation for change caused actual violence. The point to me is that this sort of rhetoric degrades our democracy and is offensive to anyone who wishes to have a true conversation about the state of our nation and our future. How can we talk to one another if either side is talking about the other this way? This episode will allow us to talk about this openly, without a simple, "I don't really want violence!" response being alright. At the very least, we'll treat incredibly backward and harmful rhetoric as it is, not as politics as usual.

Yes they are the only politicians who use "vitriolic" rhetoric. This guy was a very unstable guy who could have been set off by anything. I don't agree with the tone of any of their rhetoric but we can hardly blame stupid statements by pundits for cold-blooded, pre-meditated mass murder.
