As a veteran teacher, it's good to hear, although I can't remember the last time I made a kid stay silent for 45 minutes...

I'm not sure what happened in recent years.

When I was growing up, teachers, police and firefighters were among the most respected members of the community.

Now there are a bunch of governors and state legislators blaming public employees for budget "crises".

Here's a column by novelist Susan Straight in the LA Times praising teachers

There are a couple of things. One is "what do you have when you have 100 lawyers at the bottom of the sea? A good start"

The other is, "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."

ha...ha...ha...

What I find amusing in all of this is that the lawyers are often the ones that take the heat for situations, arguments, etc. Lawyers represent clients. Clients make the decisions. Sure there are some unscrupulous or shady characters out there, just like there is in every profession on earth. But more often than not the lawyer falls on his sword to protect the client who is the one that made the decision to proceed in a certain way. Goodness knows I've told a client to go ahead and "blame me" many a time for a decision the client wanted to make that the client knew would be unpopular with the other side. It puts the pressure on the lawyer and leaves the client free to be the "good guy" to continue the negotiation. dang lawyer... :)

I don't think it is a disrespect to teachers, fire or p[olice officer but rather the effect that their retirement benefits have on the economy. Healthcare for life and (in some instances their spouses until the employee passes away), pension plans that have to be funded that in some cases is the average salary of their last 5 years. Negotiated benefits like this have a cost that has to be paid by taxpayers.

As far as how much teachers make I have no problem with it, I believe they are paid fairly and in line. You need to pay these professions a wage that it is a profession that people still want to do.
