Can you think of any keyboardists that are great? or even just some really cool songs with amazing keyboard solos? I don't care what the style is, in fact the more styles of music the better. I'm trying to expose my little brother (15) to more than just classical pianists, which is all he knows. Lately he's expressed an interest in learning how to jam with other musicians, but the needed exposure to other styles of music, and specifically what can be accomplished musically by the keyboardist's role in a band, has been very limited for this kid.

Geddy Lee from Rush was the first one that came to my mind. Here is the song "Subdivisions" that has Geddy playing the keyboards (great song).

Here is "Tom Sawyer" where he also plays some keyboard.

I hope this helps!

Thanks. I'd forgotten about Rush and Geddy Lee.

The name that came to my mind was Chuck Leavell - mostly self-taught, played with the Allman brothers, the Stones and Clapton to name a few. There's a few youtube videos with him, and also one where he's playing Chopin's Prelude in E Minor - I thought this may help spark interest and inspiration.

Greg Rolie from Santana and Journey is someone that could be of interest. Billy Preston played with many of the greats starting with Little Richard and made a name for himself as the keyboardist for many of the later Beatles and Stones tunes and had a fine career on his own too.

Brent Mydland (now dead) of the Grateful Dead was a helluva keyboard player too.

If you want to go the jazz rout expose him to Monk. Blues and boogie which is always good to jam you can go with Otis Spann, Roosevelt Sykes, Big Maceo, Charles Brown, Pinetop Perkins Marcia Ball, Henry Butler to name a few.

Rick Wakeman (any Yes album) to add to YGB's list above. Keith Emerson is the reigning king however. Asia has some interesting keyboard work from Geoff Downes.

Billy Preston and Dr. John if you want some funky boogie to add...

Billy Joel, has some lovely piano work (Angry Young Man, Captain Jack, New York State of Mind, I Go to Extremes, Leningrad, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant)
