I was wondering what dogs people here had, and what their thoughts were on the breeds.

I may eventually get a dog, and had been doing some reading up on breeds, and such.

Thoughts?

I had a golden retriever. She was the most loyal, loving dog I have ever been around. She was all you could ask for in a pet.

I've had a ton. English Springer Spaniel, Bichon, Pit Bull, Golden Labrador, Pomeranian, Miniature Pinscher, Maltese/Papillon, Chiahuahua...

The Golden Lab is, by far, the best dog we've ever owned. Sweetest personality. My four year old niece jumps all over her, gets right in her face, and the dog doesn't even growl. The Maltese is a puppy still and loves to play, and the lab just plays right along, never biting or anything like that, even though one good bite would tear that dog in two.

I've always wanted a Siberian Husky, myself. Since I was a kid, really.

We have two Jack Russell Terriers. They are 15 and are still puppies.

I have a mutt.

Had I chosen a specific breed I'd have gone boxer.

I've always had golden retrievers that we bought from small scale breeders. Not puppy mills, just folks with a couple dogs that they bred. The one dog we got from a big breeder had a host of physical ailments (bum leg, was built kind of funny, died of cancer at around eight years old), and we think he may have been in-bred. I think you'll be better off if you can find some people who breeding their pets for extra cash rather than people who are breeding lots of dogs as their primary source of income.

Adopting from a shelter is great, but not really a viable option if you want a specific breed.

Whatever you do, don't get a dog from a pet store.

We bought our JRTs from a small breeder from outside of Woodstock. We were only going to buy one but we fell in love with two. The breeder had 4 bitches, a mother and her 3 daughters 2 of which, the mother and one daughter just had litters from the same champion stud. One of the pups we picked came from the mother's litter and the other from the daughter so they ended up being brother and sister and uncle and niece!

When we decided to get a dog my wife did a ton of research and came up with a great breed called Havanese. We've had 3 now and they are fantastic dogs - relatively small but sturdy, smart, and hypoallergenic. Very affectionate, very playful - I love them.

If you are looking for a specific breed try looking for a local "rescue" service

Lots of great animals looking for a home

Cool. Love all the responses.

I've been spending a bunch of times on Petfinder trying to do some research as to what's around. As of now I live in an apartment that doesn't allow pets anyway, but I was wondering what other people had/liked.

Anyone with any experience regarding allergy shots? Are they effective? Can you take one for the entire year?
