The Black Keys- El Camino

Cass McCombs- Wit's End

My Morning Jacket- Circuital

The Strokes- Angles

Kurt Vile- Smoke Rings for My Halo

Jay-Z and Kanye West- Watch the Throne

TV on Radio- Nine Types of Light

Wilco- The Whole Love

Gorillaz- The Fall

Still need to listen to the new Roots soundtrack.

Movie Soundtracks with an alternative feel that I would recommend:
Drive Soundtrack- Cliff Martinez and other various artists
Attack the Block Soundtrack- Basement Jaxx, Steven Price, Felix Buxton, and Simon Ratcliffe
Hanna Soundtrack- The Chemical Brothers

Cannot wait for the Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Nice picks with Cass McCombs and Kurt Vile, Prospectus. I think I'll steal a page from your book and give the "artist - album" followed by a song via YouTube. In no particular order:

Youth Lagoon - The Year of Hibernation

M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming

Wild Beasts - Smother

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Belong

When Saints Go Machine - Konkylie

Craft Spells - Idle Labor

French Films - Imaginary Future

Yuck - Yuck

Toro Y Moi - Underneath the Pine

Mostly hip hop, but I'm sure most expected that. #4, Blu & Exile, is amazing, especially considering that it came out of nowhere and consists of "leftovers" from their 2009 album, Below the Heavens (which was also a classic).

10. Lloyd Banks - Cold Corner 2

9. Common - The Dreamer/The Believer

8. The Drums - Portamento

7. The Roots - undun.

6. Elzhi - Elmatic

5. Blu & Exile – Give Me My Flowers While I Can Smell Them

4. Kendrick Lamar - Section.80

3. Tennis - Cape Dory

2. A$AP Rocky - LiveLoveA$AP

1. Big K.R.I.T. - Return of 4eva

Wasn't crazy about Cape Dory as a whole, but "Marathon" was one of my favorite tracks of the year. Good pick, dalek.

Thought the new Drums album was kinda "meh". Certainly not bad, but I think they peaked early in terms of a single song with "Let's Go Surfing".

I judge albums differently than most do. Cape Dory had 10 songs. Of those 10, 4 I didn't like, 4 I loved, and 2 are two of my favorite songs of the last few years and that I will probably listen to on and off forever. That, to me, is a great album. I'd rather have 2 or 3 AMAZING songs than 10-12 just 'good' songs.

That's why the Big KRIT mixtape was number 1 for me. At least 5 tracks will get steady play from me for the next few years.

You like Screaming Trees, right?

If so, and if you haven't already, you should check out their latest release, Last Words: The Final Recordings. Had I discovered this earlier in the year my final list would look different, it's really good.

It's streaming here:

I'll have to give that a listen. I love Mark Lanegan's voice--and there are a handful of really great Trees tunes--but I always felt that the band wasn't very good a writing great rock songs.

My bad, for whatever reason I thought you were a fan. Or at least a bigger fan than you are.

I think both Dust and Sweet Oblivion are two of the best albums to come from the Pacific Northwest back in the '90's. Uncle Anesthesia I really like too.

Their earlier stuff, like Buzz Factory, I like but I don't hold in the same regard as their later material. Some great tunes but as a whole I didn't think it was on par with their best. Perhaps that has to do with me discovering the band through their later, major label material (Uncle Anesthesia, Sweet Oblivion, Dust) and then going back to their indie stuff.

I love, love, love all kinds of music and listen to every genre. Every once in a while the year's best album just might also be one its most popular (although not very often). Not much of a revelation, but that dang Adele album is brilliant.

This is pretty much the only album I gave a dang about all year.
