Ridiculous to most of us, but not to some fundamentalist Christian schools who use textbooks that promote ideas that would be laughable if they weren't being taught to actual breathing school children.

Vouchers, funded by the State of Louisiana (taxpayers), are offered to parents to subsidize tuition costs at private schools.

I think it would be funny to take those classes as a person of reasonable knowledge and perspective.

It's very sad that in the twenty first century, people still don't accept reality. Science and history are just some conspiracy that plots to destroy people's belief in God.

As one of the old timers on these boards, I have seen the progress of the American society from the fifties on forward. Until recently, I was of the impression that almost all Americans had moved forward from the dark ages. This is the USA after all! But over the last few years I have come to realize how wrong I was.

I come from a generation that was going to change the world though peace and love. Instead, my generation became a bunch of lard a$$ couch potatoes, who are content to remain stupid and be led around by the nose by anyone who makes it easy not to do much independent analytic thinking. What's worse is that we've taught our children to be just as lazy and and content with stupidity.

This Louisiana school curriculum is, sadly, not surprising to me. It's just the way things have regressed.

And yet, there is something fundamentally wrong with raising a generation of kids with no understanding of science or critical thinking.

i encourage both. The issue here is people with flawed characters (to begin with) take religion and turn it into this evil beast.

Most people however believe that its religion that turns people into a beast.

Keep in mind Im talking about 2 of the major religions here. Islam and Christianity. A lot of it is also due to lack of actual understanding. Especially those that are translated from one language to another.

Lost in translation is a no no when it comes to religion. Its why its best to learn the native language to which it was originally written in.

This is a very touchy subject for me so even though the conversation is quite somber so far, Im going to jump out of this one. Just wanted to point out my own point of view.

But the very man whose teachings Christianity is based on loathed religion. I disagree with you vehemently - religion has always been a force for evil. Jesus despised it for this reason, villifying the ultra-religious Pharisees. Perhaps by religion you mean spirituality and humility, but to me the word denotes dogmatic ignorance.

When I was in Korea, one of my coworkers was a girl from Louisiana, 28 years old. Until we informed her otherwise, she thought lions and tigers were sexual dimorphic versions of the same species (and she was an LSU fan). I get the feeling that they're kind of screwed even without Creationism.
