Shocking news from Kansas City earlier today where a Chiefs player (confirmed to be Jovan Belcher, one of their starting linebackers) shot his girlfriend and then himself in front of Chiefs staff in a murder-suicide. He reportedly killed himself in front of Bill Polian and Romeo Crennel, their general manager and head coach, respectively. The couple leave behind an infant son. Just a very sad for so many out there. Belcher was also a local from West Babylon, Long Island. I do not agree with the NFL's decision to play this game tomorrow. While they usually handle tragedy well, this is one time where I think football should not be used so soon afterwards as a distraction for those affected. I can not think of a time in any sport that can even compare to this except for a national tragedy such as 9/11 or Katrina. My heart and prayers go out to the young woman's family, to their son, and to the family of Mr. Belcher, who was very clearly a individual in need of help. Hopefully this will help someone who is equally lost seek the help they need instead of having this reenact itself. May God bless and watch over them.

P.S. mods, I wasn't sure if this belonged in the football section or not. I know it's involving a football player, but I thought since football is only a back drop that it belonged here. Move accordingly, if necessary...thanks.

I know a lot of people that played against him in HS. All are shocked.

Az, not to get too personal or out of line, however, do you have any insights into how he was growing up? I am interested to see if we ever get the results on concussions and violence and if we as a culture realize we are asking 20 year olds (and younger) to give up the final 30-40 years of their life for about 15 years of our entertainment where they do nothing but pound into each other at the force of a car crash. Lest we neglect to mention these men are getting bigger and bigger, capable of running a 4.5 40 yard dash at 285 pounds, bench 225 pounds 35-40 pounds, and jump 35" (thinking JPP, Aldon Smith, JJ Watt, Von Miller, Demarcus Ware).

I do not have any more insight than that on him on a personal level. I knew of former players on LI that played against him. As a football coach I do worry about players and my own self as a former player. Back in the 80s and earlier smelling salt cured a concussion and aspirin helped the headaches afterwards. I have had both knees worked on the latest this past summer and have nerve damage in my neck. I never thought any thing of it until I heard of the tragic ending to one of my idols growing up Mike Webster. I worry about future and if football had anything to do with my bouts with depression.

I love football . I really love the sport. From the schemes to the twoadays and especially the violence. There is something exhilarating about hitting someone just right but even though I am a product of this game, I am really unsure that I would ever want my son to play. As a coach we teach to hit with the shoulder and that the helmet is for protection but kids see what is on Sundays and Saturdays and that is what the emulate.

I recently read an article about how Syracuse has reduced their concussions by placing an emphasis on neck exercises. Strengthening to trunk of the head seems to help in reducing concussions. Many of the exercises have more or less been eliminated in a workout routine or reduced to plyometric resistance (which is rarely performed correctly or seriously).
