In the aftermath of the mass murders in Sandy Hook, we've justifiably seen and heard great praise for teachers and first responders. In particular, the selfless, heroic teachers who gave their own lives attempting to save the children and the first-responders who entered the building not knowing if they would be shot at and perhaps killed.

As I have witnessed the praise, I couldn't help but think how those same heroes are part of "the teachers unions" and all are public employees who, in the abstract, have been attacked and made into scapegoats when states and municipalities can't balance their budgets

It's so convenient to attack those who provide for our safety on a daily basis because they have some benefits attached to their employment that others do not. And it's somewhat understandable, but not necessarily reasonable, to say public servants like police and fire knew that they were entering a risky profession. However, anyone who says that teachers knew what they were getting in to when they decided on their chosen field, are either in total denial or are just plain ignorant. How many more grieving families would there have been if not for the dedication of the five teachers who gave their lives for the children? Think about it the next time any of you want to point fingers at these dedicated professionals. They gave their lives so that the children placed in their care could live.
