I want to word this very exactly because I want to be crystal clear. In the aftermath of tragedies such as the school massacre, I inevitably feel uncomfortable with how sports teams "honor" the victims. It's not the patches or the decals, it's the somewhat crass announcing of such memorial items. For example, on Saturday the Giants organization sent out a photo of the helmet with the SHES written on it, announcing that they would honor the victims in this way. It seems cheap and small to me. Wear the decal or patch, but the fanfare attached to it comes off as self-serving and grandstanding. Same with all the scribbling on the cleats and sneakers and gloves. These events are so horrific, so unimagineable, that these "tributes" seem petty and fulsome. Perhaps even worse, they become stories - ESPN led their broadcast with an overview of how NFL teams "honored" the victims. It's as if nothing is truly important until a celebrity acknowledges it.
Am I wrong on this one?

Nope.

Prayer and decals.

I don't object to it because I have a hard time assessing how others should react to a tragedy when I'm not sure how to react myself.

I think there's going to be an inevitable amount of self-serving actions, but I think most of it comes from altruistic motivation.

Victor Cruz was on with Francesa today and Cruz, it turns out, was a hero to one of the children who was murdered in Newtown.

Cruz found out via numerous tweets from people who knew that the child idolized Cruz. That is what prompted Cruz to write the child's name on his cleats and gloves.

Cruz, who is the father of a young child, also called the murdered child's father and offered his condolences and Cruz said the father, though still overwhelmingly shaken, seemed to appreciate the call.

Reports are that the young boy had a Cruz replica jersey in his coffin when he was buried today. Cruz also said he planned to go to Newtown and give the family the cleats and gloves he had worn with their son's name.

As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing wrong with an athlete like Cruz attempting to bring some small level of comfort to a grief-stricken family.

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. I heard Cruz on Francesa after I posted the original comments above. Francesa asked if the boy had been laid to rest that day, and Cruz responded that he had been, but he didn't know if the boy was buried in a Cruz jersey. That was never in the question, so the response seemed odd to me. Cruz seems like a very nice young man, not trying to criticize him at all. I guess what I'm saying is that the story is not the murdered child, it's the celebrity's reaction to the murdered child.
And, again, why tweet or announce this stuff at all unless you expect some praise for it.
