I've decided to risk injecting some politics back into the General Off Topic Forum.

I'm sure there are folks on NYFS who know more about judicial history than I do, but I'm hard pressed to think of a Supreme Court that has done more than this one has to undermine the voting process for ordinary citizens.

First, there was Citizens United, which took an electoral system that was already corrupted by the excessive influence of people with the money to buy access, and completely opened the flood gates so that those with the means could pour billions more into the process, in many cases, with complete anonymity (except to the politicians they were buying).

Now, less than a year removed from an election in which one party did everything it could to disenfranchise significant numbers of the other party's core constituencies, the SCOTUS has ruled that we don't need a section of the Voting Rights Act. This with Republicans all over the country concocting laws to limit voter participation and tangible evidence that the Justice Department, by enforcing the part of the law that was struck down, was able to preempt attemps to suppress votes in the 2012 election.

Now, presumably, people will be able to take discrimination cases to trial, but it amounts to the opportunity to appeal a call after you've lost the game and the winners of the fixed elections will be even more inclined to disenfranchise their opponents.

Either the majority of the court in these two cases is completely oblivious to what's going on in the real world, or they're in the tank for the powerful interests that support the Republican Party. Maybe both.

yeah, It's pretty devastating that the highest court in the land can be such a political entity. I don't think you have to have one particular political view to be disturbed by it.

There's stuff like this, and disenfranchising voters, and gerrymandering districts, and trying to "sneak" legislation through during special sessions or when opponents are not present to vote, etc. that IMO, should just be abhorrent to everyone and non-partisan.

This is what happens when one party makes non-governance its governing principle.

When the political process of election is the end game rather than the service itself, democratic principles are compromised.

Entrenchment is really the problem...

I wonder if we have ever truly been enfranchised.
