He was one of the detectives on Law & Order (later years of the original series) and he had a pretty good run as a character actor playing cops, mobsters, and others involved in the justice sysrem.

He was in movies such as "Midnight Run" and either "Get Shorty" or its sequel "Be Cool", I can't remember.

Before acting, he was a Chicago cop and I first became a fan when he starred in "Crime Story", where he portrayed a Chicago cop recruited by the Feds to lead an organized crime task force.

It never gained an audience in 2 years on NBC, but it used 'arcs' where stories extended over multiple episodes. It was set in Chicago and Las Vegas in the late 50s and early 60s and had some great location filming with the big cars with fins in the street scenes and the flashy Las Vegas of that era

It also used big casts that included an unknown Julia Roberts playing a teenage girl and Andrew Dice Clay in a serious role as a young mobster before he became an infamous standup comic. Clay's character was the nephew of an elderly Jewish mobster played by Joseph Wiseman, who had played Dr No in the early James Bond movie. Gary Sinise, Kevin Spacey, Ving Rhanes, and Christian Slater also acted in the show at a time before reaching the greater stardom they would achieve.

Anyway, the series and Farina were very good and realistic, especially for network TV of that era.
