Hey guys. I landed a great job in the city about a month ago. However, my girlfriend also has a great job in a suburban town about 20 minutes outside of Philadelphia. To make it fair, we're moving halfway between NYC and Philly so our commutes are similar.

Most of my hours are at night or at non-peak hours (think noon-8 PM) so traffic isn't a huge concern. However, I've had problems navigating during a certain shift, and that's my 6 PM-2 AM shift.

I love NJ Transit trains. They're clean, the stations are clean, and although they may be a little on the expensive side, I'd rather pay extra to not deal with some not-so-savory people on cheaper modes of transportation. However, NJ Transit trains don't run from 1:30 AM-4:30 AM. That's a problem when I get off work at 2 AM.

I've tried many things. At first I took the PATH from Journal Square into the city. I've heard terrible things about the area, and there were several instances where I just didn't feel safe.

I tried the PATH at Grove St. in Jersey City. The area seemed a lot more upscale with a lot more foot traffic. However, that recent murder literally feet away from the station has spooked me a little. It happened right around the same time I was in the area. 2:30-3 AM just isn't a good time to be walking the streets of Jersey City.

I tried to bite the bullet and drive in. Not only was the Lincoln Tunnel a bonafide disaster, but street parking wasn't as easy to come by as one of my coworkers told me. I had to pay upwards of $30 to park.

Is there something I'm missing? The two things I haven't tried yet have been driving in through the Holland (along with a parking coupon that someone tipped me off on- $10 for the shift- not bad) or the PATH in Hoboken. I wanted to know if anyone here had any good tips on modes of transportation to take into the city.

FYI, if it helps, my office is near Chelsea Market.

Thanks!

I'm not sure about the train schedules, but there's a PATH station in Harrison that lets off across the street from Red Bull Arena.

The PATH line runs from Newark Penn Station to Journal Square and Harrison is the only station between the two.

If you're uncomfortable around Journal Square, you'd probably have similar concerns in Newark.

Harrison isn't exactly suburban, but the area near the PATH is geared toward commuters and there's a lot of parking.

Also, it's a small town geographically, so there's less chance of the cops being distracted by activity somewhere else in town
