They do not score many runs but I find them very watchable.

Ichiro is still the main draw and King Felix right behind him, but then there's Michael Pineda. 7IP, 7H, 4ER, 0BB, 9K earlier tonight in a loss against the Texas Rangers. I submit that Cordell Walker was mostly responsible for Pineda losing tonight. In the eyes of a ranger, he was the unsuspecting stranger.

He throws heat. He has a dirty slider. And he is 6'7". Crack one open and watch him. Major league hitters are having a hard time hitting him.

Hosmer looks to really be coming into his own.

Except hes in the Royals' system.

I've watched a couple Pineda starts. Hes got electric stuff. His average fastball velocity of 95.8 mph is tops in baseball right now. Hes going to dominate righties with his fastball and hard slider combo. His change-up is clearly still a work in progress, granted he hasn't had too many issues with lefties so far either.

Yeah, Smoak has been great. Its only 101 PA, and there has certainly been some fortunate luck involved, but he owns a .397 wOBA while playing in a tough park. Impressive stuff so far. Funny how some people wrote him off so easily after his struggles last season.

Wieters would actually look halfway decent this season if he could get his average up to it's career norm, ISOP and ISOD aren't bad.

So I feel compelled to jump in here on the Smoak stuff, since I was one of the ones who said, if I were the Rangers, I'd give him up 10 times out of 10 for Cliff Lee when everyone else was freaking out about letting him go for a rental.

I feel like if this were someone else, we'd naturally bring up the fact that his LD rate is way down this year (23% last year vs. 13% this year), his BABIP is at .360, and he's K'ing at almost the same rate as he did last year. He's increased his HR/FB ratio pretty substantially, despite moving to a tougher hitting environment.

What does that all mean? Who knows...maybe he was just unlucky last year and its evening out. But we had a 400 PA sample of him doing nothing at all last year, and 100 PA of him killing it this year. Where does he really lay? Probably somewhere in the middle. But I'll still stick with my comments from last year: good hitting 1B are not rare enough to hold back from dealing in the right move (if you are a contender) to put you over the top. I don't think for one second the Rangers regret that trade, and they shouldn't, and I wouldn't if I made it, which was my point at the time.

And as a bonus, they managed to pawn off a truly despicable human being, in Josh Lueke, on big Jack Z. That's a clear winner, in my book.
