Personally I still would have took Montero over Smoak if I were the Mariners GM.

If you have ANY belief at all that Montero is a C, even part time, its a slam dunk. And despite everyone every year saying "He'll never be a catcher", he remains one, and the scouting reports seem to improve a bit each year.

And even if you don't, its still probably the better deal.

But, count me happy that he didn't.

I think part of the issue with Montero is similar to what you had with Piazza: if they guy can't play catcher, where does he play? My understanding is that Montero has poor footwork (like Piazza), so he could be a worse defender at first than behind the plate, in which case you've basically got a DH. Smoak is supposed to be quite strong defensively, on the other hand.

Smoak has benefited from some BABIP luck, but at the same time his LD% isn't going to stay that low either. Hes showing better overall patience at the plate (more walks, less strikeouts), big time power, and some improvements vs lefties. The sample size for all of this isn't all that conclusive obviously, but hes been terrific so far and I'm sure the Mariners are thrilled to have him.

As for Montero, I probably would have preferred him too, but you can certainly make the case Smoak was a better choice if you believe Montero is a future 1B/DH. Plus, being a right-handed hitter, he doesn't fit Safeco all that well.

If 'winning on Smoak' constitutes just 2011 production, sure, but I still think he'll be good over the long haul. Hes got a great eye at the plate and I think he'll boast more power. His numbers will look sexier when his BABIP luck starts improving too.

Lefties are largely responsible for his pedestrian line. Against righties hes got a 128 wRC+ this year, opposed to 96 against the southpaws.

As someone pointed out on twitter, with the Smoakamotive gone via a waiver claim by Toronto, Jack Z now has only CHARLIE FURBUSH for his major league team to show for the trades of Cliff Lee, Doug Fister and Michael Pineda.
