They'll be fun to watch...particularly if Martinez can return quicker than expected...

I'm not sure I understand this desire to "be bold" or whatever you wanna call it and steadfastly proclaim that they will use Miggy at 3rd full time and Prince at 1B full time.

Leyland just gave his projected lineup and it included a 3 way rotation between Clete Thomas, Andy Dirks and Don Kelly.

If you're going to use such a fingy bat at DH, wouldn't it make a lot more sense to use either Prince or Miggy there and use a glove guy at 3B, like Inge? Either way a bad bat is getting into your lineup, but this way you don't hurt yourself in the field unnecessarily while still using a bad bat at DH. It especially makes no sense when you'd use Don Kelly, who doesn't hit at all but is a pretty good glove who CAN PLAY 3rd, at DH. Probably similarly should use the OF-types, if you want to get them in the lineup and want to use Miggy at 3B, in the OF over the likes of Delmon Young or Brennan Boesch.

Just seems very silly, to me, no?

crap it. A couple years too long but I don't care, I dig the deal.

If Milwaukee was able to win with that infield last year, Detroit should be able to win with this one. Cabrera-Fielder is such a ridiculous middle of the lineup.

Maybe we can trade Murphy there yet...

Not so silly if Fielder and Cabrera aren't on board with the idea of DH'ing.

Prince Fielder, second year into this mammoth deal: 122 wRC+, 0.9 fWAR in 434 PA. Also made the Anti-Trade Value series (or, essentially, the worse contracts in baseball series):
Quote:
Maybe it’s just a slump. Good players have mediocre stretches, and even in Fielder’s down season, he’s still posting a 122 wRC+. Perhaps he finishes strong and provides a few more elite offensive seasons for the Tigers.

That’s a lot of ifs and maybes for $168 million over the next seven years. Fielder wasn’t highly prized by many teams as a free agent because of the costs associated with a supersized DH-in-the-making and the historically poor aging curves of position players carrying that much weight. The first year of his deal turned out just fine for Detroit, but if 2013 is the start of a trend, this deal could get ugly in a hurry.

Fielder is among the worst defenders and worst baserunners in the sport. He’s only good if he’s mashing, and right now, he’s not mashing. One dimension players making $24 million per year have to be among the game’s best hitters to have value, and while Fielder might get back to that level, a team would have to have a tremendous amount of confidence in a rebound in order to take him off the Tigers hands.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2013-ant ... contracts/

In fairness to Prince, he's at least not the worst contract. Pujols, who has been worth even LESS than Fielder has in 2013, ranks #1 with $200M+ still left on a backloaded deal ($30M in 2021!). Yikes.
