I actually don't think the Stros did that well, actually. They did get a DH for the season...

I guess if Peacock keeps the K-Rate, but does better about command of the strike zone, he might be solid. Houston needs pitching in any case.

Max Stassi doesn't impress me at all.

Time to make a Weeks/Taylor deal, Sandy. Although I guess Murphy is no longer as good of a fit with Lowrie in the mix.

Derrick Goold @dgoold
That is now three years in a row that the #Cardinals have had an injury to ace-level starter during/before spring training. #stlcards

World Series Champ, NL Runner-up, ??

Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez has agreed to a seven-year, $175 million contract that should be finalized before spring training, making him the highest-paid pitcher in baseball history, a person familiar with the contract details told USA TODAY Sports.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the contract is not yet official.

Hernandez was scheduled to earn $19.5 million in 2013 and $20 million in '14. Instead, his new contract will take effect this season and pay him a record average annual value of $25 million through 2019.

If Felix keeps up his pace and stays healthy he's worth that but eesh, pitcher attrition can turn a long-term deal nightmarish in an instant.

Look at his velocity deterioration already.

Its kind of a move you HAVE to make if you're Seattle (because you have $ and if he leaves and is great elsewhere, you never live it down) but I don't think you're excited about it.

On another Mariner note, they got Saunders for 1 year (Churchill hears there's an option - what a concept!).

Maybe a blessing in disguise for Seattle:

Buster_ESPN: Filed to ESPN news desk: Concern about Felix Hernandez's elbow might affect contract talks about the proposed extension.

In the end, the Pirates turned a non-throwing arm injury to Liriano into a renegotiation of his original 2/12 contract (seemed like a fair balance of risk/reward for both sides, to me) into now only a 1 year/1m guarantee with a team option, loaded with incentives that COULD be worth up to the original 12m.

Thats a pretty nice job by them.

A Padres' blogger at SB Nation is absolutely getting destroyed for a terrible article he wrote about taking joy in Karsten Whitson getting hurt. The post was already taken down so I can't link to it but it was an incredibly immature piece. He deserves all the crap that is getting thrown his way.

Better be as a 4th/5th OF.

And by the way my Badenhop comment was because he's nothing special, essentially an average reliever and you seemed to be pretty upset we didn't get him. Not saying he wouldn't be useful but we can add a bunch of guys that can possibly put up 3.50-4 ERAs out of the pen.

I'm pretty "upset" that for a couple of years now people have used money and "well what moves have been made that you want Sandy to make?" and "Do you want to trade Wheeler or Flores? Don't think so" and the bullpen has been AWFUL for 2 straight years (Don't think anyone on here can debate that fact)... so the Brewers land an "average" reliever (which is better than 99% of what we sent out there in 2012) for essentially "nothing" (a prospect not in their top 30 per BA or top 20 per Jon Mayo in a system that is worse than ours).

Bobby Parnell is the only reliever we currently have that can honestly be penciled in for "average" production in 2013. These are the small little moves that help a team with limited funds toward having a solid bullpen. Badenhop can go multiple innings, he's very good vs. righties and he's team controlled for the next 2 seasons (and is projected to make 1.6 million). This is how you fix a bullpen.
