Red Sox just tied the game on a grand slam by Ortiz in the bottom of the 8th, 2 outs. Unbelievable.

don't know why they added Coke to the roster if they weren't going to use him against Ortiz there.

was also interesting that Iglesias was brought in for defense that inning and his error lead to the big inning. Plus 2 other seeing eye groundball hits in the inning...

I don't think Coke was the right choice anyway; he pretty much stunk this year and hasn't pitched in a game in nearly a month. Benoit was clearly their best relief pitcher available at that point and he's actually quite dominant against lefties (they hit just .193/.258/.266 against him this year).

Leyland saw the save situation was actually right there and he went to his closer; not enough managers do this even though it's the right call.

I have no idea how Benoit faced so many more LHed hitters (than RHed) this year (152 to 113) but regardless of that and his general success this season, with RPers almost any statistical anomaly due to handedness is from SSS and you should prob defer to career numbers. Coke for his career has a .641 OPS against vs. LHed hitting and Benoit .670. That's obviously not much of a difference and bc of *that* you could make the case that Benoit is the hotter pitcher. I'd just question the purpose of having Coke on the playoff roster at all if you aren't going to use him to get a lefty out in a tough spot.

It's easy to claim that I might be second guessing there but I said immediately at the time that he must be bringing Coke in and of course was surprised when he went to Benoit.

Quote:
Why was left-hander Phil Coke warming up?

"In case (Joaquin) Benoit really let it get away," Leyland said. "I didn't want (Benoit) throwing a lot of pitches."

So if Benoit had thrown a lot of pitches in the eighth without getting the third out, Leyland apparently would have brought in Coke.

Quote:
Ortiz is 2-for-18 lifetime against Coke. So when Coke was warming up along with Benoit as Ortiz's at-bat approached, it seemed that Leyland might have Coke pitch to him. If Coke didn't retire Ortiz, then Leyland could have summoned Benoit.

But that never was Leyland's plan.

apparently Coke is just there as a decoy. um, ok...

Verlander's streak of 34 consecutive scoreless innings (dating back to the regular season) ends with Napoli's home run here in the 7th.
