AL Cy Young: Danny Salazar

Averaged 97 mph on his 4-seam fastball last season; struck out 30.8% of batters faced, which ranked 2nd in MLB among starters with at least 50 IP; 14.6% swinging strike percentage, which ranked 1st.

Here's a list of starters since 2002, over at least a 50 IP in a single season, who have averaged at least 93 mph on their fastball and struck out 30% of batters faced in a season (50 IP minimum): http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?p ... &players=0

Picking King Felix, Darvish, Sale, Verlander, etc. is boring. Salazar is the best pitcher in baseball that nobody (fully) knows.

was just one game, but I saw his last ST outing and he got shellacked fwiw. His command was way off. He'll be good but I think the legend is a little bit ahead of the reality. Every FG writer got a memo to jump on the Salazar bandwagon this winter for sure. Conversely, I think people are sleeping on Ventura. If he were 6'4" he's all people would be talking about.

I like Ventura too. I've followed some of Dave Cameron's recent chats and he doesn't seem to like him very much, citing his "okay results" in the minors last season and MLB, which is just weird. He struck out over 27% of batters faced in the minors, posted a 3.17 FIP in the PCL, and his MLB debut was all of 3 starts. His averaged 4-seam velocity in that brief MLB stint was 98.6. The projection systems think he'll be pretty good for a rookie. Not sure what there isn't to like.

Should be a really strong rookie class in the AL with he, Abreu, Tanaka, Bogaerts, etc.

I know he's not a rookie but I think Martin Perez is going to sneak up on people too. Seems very polished and a guy who can outperform projections, to me.

I'm a big Salazar fan too, but Cy Young in his first full season? That is bold…

Yep, that's part of it. Maybe I'll look like a buffoon, but why not have a little fun with it, you know? I picked Fernandez in the NL with a similar idea in mind but that doesn't look nearly as bold now that Kershaw could miss all of April. I was also tempted to pick Baez for NL Rookie of the Year.

can I change predictions? LOL

I think I underestimated the Jays. That ALE is going to be pretty wild. And I think SEA may come sooner than expected cause Paxton looked really good yesterday.

Josh Hamilton out 6-8 weeks, undergoing thumb surgery after hurting it sliding into first base last night. They're already off to a slow start, with their playoff odds plummeting from best to worst of the four AL West contenders; this won't help.
