I heard a report last night of how Tanaka was the third "rookie" to win 8 games before June.

I don't know how much the Yankees are pushing this line, but if they do, they're guilty of trying to have it both ways.

They made a fairly big deal out of Hideki Matsui passing a milestone that entailed combining his stats from Japan and MLB. They also did it to a lesser level with Ichiro.

Can't combine the two country's stats and then claim the best pitcher in one is a rookie when he crosses the Pacific

Maybe I'm being inconsistent myself, but I don't consider accomplished veteran pros to be rookies. And I don't think MLB stats and Japanese top-level stats are the same.

My view is that he's a rookie until the rules state that he isn't, and they haven't changed the rules yet. I also think there's kind of a slippery slope in determining that Japanese imports aren't rookies; NPB is maybe the equivalent of Triple-A (or between Double-A and Triple-A), and is the best league in the world outside of MLB. What about Korea and Cuba though? These leagues are a cut below NPB, but they have had players make the jump and excel in MLB. Was Ryu a rookie, but Darvish not? Perhaps the situation is a bit different now that MLB formally recognizes participation in international professional leagues in regards to international bonus pools, but I would say that a 25 year old rookie from Korea/Japan/Cuba is just as much a rookie as a 28 year old who slaved away in Triple-A for years before getting a big break. Nobody would argue that the latter player shouldn't be considered a rookie, and he was getting paid while paying his dues in a lesser league. Unless you're going to argue that these international leagues are on par with MLB (which nobody will), I don't see how else to consider it.
