Partially torn UCL. Wow. We know where this usually ends up.

With 6 weeks of rest and a PRP working to perfection and he's never injured again?

Right?

Does anyone know if Japanese baseball is having the rate of TJS as in the United States?

I know they train differently over there and that the pitchers tend to go longer between starts.

And you also have to be wary of a sample of one.

But it has to raise questions when a guy is durable in a pro environment, comes here and dominates in MLB and then his arm gives out in the 4th month of his first season stateside.

7 years at $155 million in salary, but the way it's structured really ruins it. He has an opt-out after the 4th year, which means if he's really good, which he appears to be, the Yanks will only have him for 4 years and $88 million, and then he'll seek out a better deal than the 3 years and $67 million remaining on the original contract. But if he turns into a pumpkin or can't stay healthy, he obviously won't opt-out, and they're on the hook for the full 7 years and $155 million. The Yankees basically took on the entire risk in the deal: in short it's 4/88 and then 7/155 if things go south.

Plus a $20 posting fee.

So if he doesn't work out, the Yankees pay 7 years, $175 million for his services. For reference, Felix Hernandez signed a 7-year, $175 million extension with the Mariners.

Those opt-out clauses are really awful. Basically if the player isn't living up to expectations, the team is stuck with him for longer. If the player is living up to expectations, they will at a minimum force a renegotiation.

If there's gonna be an opt-out, it should be mutual.
