Congrats to the Royals. Wish I would have stayed up for the 12th! And go Pirates tonight!

I was about to turn it off to catch some zzz's, glad I didn't! That was crazy! Happy KC gets to experience the real playoffs after a 30 year drought. Pulling for the Pirates this evening too...

Here comes Zach Britton to save Game 2 of the NLDS after getting the biggest out of Game 1, throwing 97.

But Blake Taylor, y'all.

As long as they don't win it all, I'm fine. They play in a big market so it's good for baseball.

Giants go up 2-0 heading home, Looks like the Dodgers will salvage a split v. the Cards. Hoping that the O's Royals ALCS is set in stone by tomorrow night.

Hoping for a Dodgers vs. Orioles/Royals WS at this point.

Love that Petit has made me feel somewhat vindicated for continuing to believe in him even when big league teams had more or less given up. As for last night's game, I checked GameDay during Panda's AB in the 9th, realized there was a chance the Giants come back, but never checked again until this morning. Wow!

Here is what I wrote about Petit in my book this year.

"Yusmeiro Petit was one of the best pitchers at the rookie ball level last year, dominating the Appy League and, if anything, pitching even better after a promotion to the New York-Penn. Note his outstanding 85/10 K/BB ratio over the season. His K/BB, K/IP, and H/IP marks are all excellent. Scouts aren't sold on him, though. His fastball is average, and given his small size, it doesn't look like he will pick up a lot of additional velocity. He knows how to pitch, though, and I expect he'll have no major problems in full-season ball. If he passes the Double-A test, he could emerge as a Nelson Figueroa type. Grade C+."

Petit has exceeded my expectations this year, dominating the South Atlantic League. Since being promoted to the Florida State League, he is 2-2 but with a 1.14 ERA in five starts, with a 30/12 K/BB in 24 innings, just 12 hits allowed. "No major problems in full-season ball" and "Nelson Figueroa type" were certainly underestimates of what he could do.

The Mets signed Petit as a free agent out of Venezuela in 2001. He's just 19, so his age-relative-to-league factor is certainly positive. His fastball runs at 90-92 mph. He already had a good changeup, and he's improved his curveball this year. Listed generously at 6-foot in height, Petit may not pick up much additional velocity. But his fastball has good movement, and he mixes it well with the change and curve. Basically, he is a pitcher's pitcher, someone who doesn't have awesome physical tools, but who understands the skills of pitching ... at least to A-ball hitters.

Statistically, Petit is one of the best pitching prospects around. We still need to see how he adjusts to Double-A, and there's always the risk of injury. Assuming that he stays healthy, he could see the major leagues late next year.

I just remember liking the peripherals even when his ERA wasn't so hot back when he was with the D-Backs, and arguing that there was still a solid major leaguer there if someone gave him a chance.

I like how all the Royals disappointments are busting out in the playoffs.
