I feel like this falls into a larger misunderstanding of what free speech actually means. Back when the Duck Dynasty guy ran his mouth about homosexuality about a year ago, I had some friends who went on and on about free speech when he was ultimately criticized. The same thing seems to be implied here, with Hunter essentially taking issue with the fact that he was called out for statements that he made publicly. There seems to be a feeling within a certain segment of the population, particularly in regards to homosexuality, that they should be able to say whatever they want without suffering consequences. In reality, free speech is only a guarantee that the government will not restrict an individual's free speech, obviously, but many people miss this fact (Hunter amongst them, apparently).

I made this point previously about this same issue. With homosexuality there is some kind of wierd idea that there is a competing, valid other side to the argument. No one who is sane says to an anti-Semite or a racist, "Well, I guess we agree to disagree." But on this issue this false equivalency exists. Adherance to ancient fables is not an acceptable reason to condemn homsexuality. Some one should remind Torii Hunter that his book of fairy tales is pretty accepting of slavery.

I don't even think you need to go as deep as to discuss the actual subject matter of his words. Bottom line: no matter who you are, if you make your views public, expect to be called out on your views, whether you're a public figure or you're Genmet or you're Northway. If you want to be left alone about it, then keep you're freaking mouth shut.
