Isn't this kind of what happened in 2013? And then they bounced back just fine in 2014, and obviously were preseason WS favorites this year.

I don't think every unexpectedly bad season needs to follow a long rebuild. For the most part, their impending FAs were part of the problem this year anyway with the exception of Zimmerman, but who's to say Lerner doesn't just resign him (or spend that money elsewhere)?

well, I'd say that with Giolito maybe a half season from breaking in, their rotation by the 2nd half of next year could be Scherzer, Strasburg, Gio, Joe Ross, and Giolito. Not sure I'd consider it a weakness.

Right and I would guess most would project Turner to be able to at least match what Desmond did this year. Fister was jettisoned anyway.

So, uh, yeah, I am doubting we see a blowup or a thought that impending free agents are going to ruin this current teams' window. We outplayed expectations this year, they underperformed.

If neither team resigns any of their impending FAs (and I'm counting Reed in there since I don't think we're going to tender him, but rather look to resign him for something lesser...but maybe I'm wrong), they would 100% enter next as the favorites in the division.

Of course after this run, I am expecting us to resign/replace Yo, the bullpen guys, and the veteran bench guys. But we have the greater impending FA risk, no doubt.

Nationals players are (off the record) apparently OK with Pape's actions.

And...Williams is out, along with all his coaches:

Quote:
The Washington Nationals have fired manager Matt Williams after two seasons, the team announced Monday.

The news was first reported by James Wagner of the Washington Post.

In addition, the Nationals said they will not renew the contracts of their entire coaching staff, including bench coach Randy Knorr, who was a managerial candidate in 2014.

It will be interesting to see who they hire as this may give a clue as to which way they will approach 2016. If they bring in a veteran type like a Bud Black or Ron Gardenhire, then it looks as if they will merely attempt to re-load, keeping as many vets as possible. If on the other hand they give the job to an up-and-comer (no not Wally Backman), then it could signal that they are planning on at least a partial rebuild, the old one step back to take two forward approach. I think the latter is better scenario for the Mets chances next year.

I think Dusty would do an incredible job with the Nationals. He is more than capable of getting a playoff caliber team to the playoffs, a harder skill than it seems.

I suffer from some serious Dusty Baker fatigue. I guess the Nats are kind of old school so maybe he makes sense, but I really don't see why guys who obstinately refuse to acknowledge that analytics have any value whatsoever continue to get jobs.

Again, the Nationals have a clubhouse problem. Dusty's the perfect guy to fix that.

Throw Mattingly into this group, and I'm loving the Mets' chances for next season, too.

The Cubs might be though. Mets cubs rivalry, the 2 lovable losers? Who'd have thunk it?
