Net loss: reputation, 80 games of salary

Net benefit: millions of dollars and a baseball career

Worth it.

FYI, Gordon's career vs. the Mets is what it seemed: .358/.369/.438/.807 (this includes is fringey LA years)

Goes to prove one thing. Taking PED's doesn't make you automatically a power hitter.

Some are making assumptions wrt when he began using. Wouldn't he have been subject to testing all along? from 2014 on? Something doesn't add up.

Bottom line is that until contracts become voidable for such offenses, I guess some will deem these penalties as being worth it.

so he turned PED's into $50 million, less the 80 game unpaid vacation he gets this summer. Not bad.

Let's be honest, I think Marlon Byrd may be a similar case. Looked finish, took PED's, earned an additional $16+ million late in career.

There will never be a day where the PA agrees to voiding contracts due to PED's. What would stop a team from trying to get out of a really bad deal? What would stop the Red Sox from tossing a banned substance into Panda's linguini and clam sauce? Not happening.

While this would be quite ruthless on a team's part, I agree that players with big contracts would litigate every suspension so intensely that every case would be a drawn out nightmare.

Not to mention a player could use this as a means of voiding his own deal. Signed a discounted deal as a second year player that carries you through year thirty? No problem, just take an 80 games suspension and hit free agency at age 27.

IMO, the issue isn't so much is that teams would be ruthless, it's just that the teams would not be incentivized to care about what players are doing. Right now teams still need to do their homework on players and calculate PED risk into the value of the contract (along with all of the other normal risks). Ruthlessness would be available though, and I certainly wouldn't put it outside the realm of possibility when hundreds of millions of dollars are potentially on the line for ownership. Wouldn't be pretty to see organizations just tossing players right under the bus the first chance they get.

I guess the question is, how do you calculate PED risk? If you told me a Marlin just got suspended for PEDs, Dee Gordon would have been my 10th-15th guess. Right now the owners have most of the risk while the players have very little. But the MLBPA has always had more power than most other major sports.

WASHINGTON The Dee Gordon that Don Mattingly remembers with the Dodgers not so long ago isn’t the same player he sees now with the Marlins. Gordon is not only bigger, he’s also much better.

“He’s physically stronger,” Mattingly said. “I think when we had him, he was 145 [pounds]. He was skinny.”

The Marlins list Gordon at 170 pounds. The reigning National League batting champion is off to another hot start, going 6 for 11 in the Marlins’ first two games.

This article is from April 7, I remember during our first series with the Marlins there was multiple mentions of Mattingly saying Gordon looked bigger. I wonder if he knew about the failed test when he made these statements.

One of the biggest positives of taking PEDs is the faster recovery and lower risk for injury. Gordon always had a great 1st half in LA and then fell off a cliff from being beat up and warn down. Actually a very smart move on his part.

Mattingly claims he wasn't told till just before the last game Gordon played.
