Baseball is printing money, and the players deserve a huge chunk of it.

But you have to pay for production.

When you give someone a 7 year contract you cross your fingers and hope to get 4 productive years out of it, because you know the back end is just going to be merde.

Yep the minor/arb/FA system needs to be re-worked. Most pitchers have thrown almost all their best innings before they even get to FA.

If the 3 unproductive back end years bother you so much, think of it as being paid for during the pre-arb and arb years when the teams are making out like bandits. It more or less evens out in the long run.

What sense do people get in terms of what it will take to keep our guys, knowing these numbers?

If deGrom and Harvey continue pitching the way they have? Not all that much.

That's fine if you're re-signing your own guys...but if you're signing someone else's FA you don't get that benefit either

deGrom's been fine for all this talk of diminished velocity. He will be older when he gets to FA though so he won't get as long-term a deal. Harvey I still think bounces back eventually and gets his $300 million contract but it might not be this year and I doubt he's getting that money from us either.
