2 solid prospects. (discussed in the game day thread the other day), but

Tatis Jr. a $700K signing, so there's some upside potential there. Hasn't played yet so no numbers to go on.

Erik Johnson is a former 2nd round draft pick who was briefly a top 100 MLB Prospect, who's not had much success in MLB so far as a starter but could still turn into one. Possible comp on the mets might be Montero, but I think he's got a better track record than Montero and less injury prone.

These guys don't blow me away, but it's a pretty solid return. Padres also eat a chunk of Shields' salary and I'd call it a win for both teams. Chi-Sox get a guy who could help them this year, Padres dump salary and improve their farm system and add a young starting pitcher still on a rookie contract.

I've always loved a good underdog story. Go Mets (2018). I know an underdog when I see one.

Pads got absolutely hosed with Shields - coming and going. I mean really got so little back considering how much money they ate. Only positive in the 2 years of Preller ruin, er reign, is all the early draft picks they have coming up this week (6 of the first 85). Aside from that, it's been a train wreck out there that is going to take years to recover from.

It's funny cause in a sense what he did, it's what every owner did 30 years ago (contracts were smaller back then), they tried to build winners. I respect a guy for trying to build a winner, but where I draw the line is trading prospects when the upside is, 2nd place if they're lucky? Too little reward for too much mortgaging of the future. But I still want to applaud the guy for trying to put a winner together. Yes, it was some of the worst GMing in the 21st century, but I still want to give the guy props for bucking the trend (not to mention common sense) and giving it a try. (does that make any sense at all?)

What I'm saying is, yes, he did some of the dumbest things any GM has ever done, but he did them for the right reasons, so, that gets him at least 20% back in terms of respect, but he still loses 80% of my respect cause he didn't see what everyone else on the planet saw.
