Just out of curiosity, which team signs Hector Olivera?

Sat Sep 10, 2016 12:31 pm

He's already being paid so he's going to be a vet minimum signing. There's got to be a team who'll at least consider him?

3B/LF (probably LF as I'm guessing they moved him off 3rd for a reason) and even though he's struggled in 2016 his numbers were fine in 2015. He also has a 10 day jail sentence in his past, but there's still enough talent there for a team to take a flyer

or, maybe not.

Honestly, who cares? I don't really see how his numbers were "fine" in 2015, as he didn't really cut it by conventional or advanced metrics. .253/.310/.405/.715 isn't going to cut it from a left fielder, nor is a 98 OPS+. He was replacement level according to BRef WAR. Granted, we're talking tiny sample sizes here in both the majors and minors, but he looks like a historically bad signing. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in the Frontier League.

Just 12 Ks in 87 PAs is a legit K rate, as he'd been out of baseball all of 2014 and the first 2 months of 2015, so no spring training, just straight to the minors. His 2015 was fine given the circumstance and BA wouldn't have ranked him #55 prospect if they didn't see anything.

2016, numbers were worse, but again, small sample size.

Maybe it's who cares territory, but I also see a Jose Reyes reclamation type at vet minimum dollars. He might be a solid contact hitter/leadoff type and a LF/3B/2B, even in a bench role, that's not a bad guy to have.

I'm not saying we should sign him, but I'll bet somebody gives him a look.

Guys coming from other leagues are notoriously hard to rank; I'm not going to put a ton of stock in BA ranking him as highly as they did. I don't think he's a big leaguer.
