Malussis was just talking to a reporter at Jets camp and the reporter says Mason is in the building and we should know in a few hours whetehr or not he passed his physical. If so, then Cotchery is gone.

The more I look at this, the more it makes sense.

Mason is obviously near the end. But he still really has been playing at a pretty high level. And I think we see WR's hang on longer than almost any other position.

At their respective bests (and I don't mean Mason 10 years ago...I merely mean a healthy Mason now), Mason is probably just a slight upgrade here, and maybe not worth the hustle and bustle, especially since the long-time Jets seem to be upset over this. But it looks like they're going to save some cap room here, plus you just don't know about Cotchery's health and what last year's performance really means. I remembered it being bad, but the numbers are actually much worse than I imagined. And he lead the team in drops (so I wasn't just making that up)...its pretty tough to do that when Braylon is your teammate, and even more so when you play 4 less games than him. So yeah, it was a really bad season for Cotch.

Sounds like both sides might just be ready to move on, too. Reporters asked Cotch about taking a paycut/restructuring to stay and he basically said he had done things like that in the past, and a release is probably just best for both sides assuming Mason passes his physical (and the Jets better hope he does now with how public this has become).

Best wishes to someone who always carried himself the right way. But I'm over the personal aspect of it already I think, and like the move for its on-field implications.

Ruh roh.

The Mason thing seems to be screeching to a halt here, with Cotch already let go.

We could be turning the receiving core from a big strength to a big weakness. Talk about Jeremy Kerley and Scotty McKnight all you want...with Plax already down, you can't be relying on those 2 to be the 3rd receiver(s).

Big 180 from a week ago, with them looking at bringing in Heap as a 2nd TE, Cotch still here, etc.

Boss, I have no idea what the Giants offered you but was it worth it to hope to catch balls from Jason Campbell a/o Trent Edwards?

Imma pissed.

Bruce Johnson's season looks over after a terrible injury in training camp.

I am not even going to get into the Osi situation and no, I am not even playing the trading game where we somehow get better by trading him for John Carlson and a Day 3 draft pick from the Seahawks.

We re-signed Rocky Bernard. I wish I could replicate the deadpan 'Yay!' perfected by Aisha Tyler voicing Agent Lana Kane on Archer through the internet but I can't.

Tollefson was also re-signed.

Getting to non-Giants/Jets news, the Cincinnati Bengals are a curious case. First, Deuce Lutui failed his physical with the team and they reneged their offer and then Donte Whitner went from signing there to going to San Francisco. There always seems one of these deals for a team once an off-season, but twice?

Saints sign Olin Kreutz.

Lions sign Stephen Tulloch.

Redskins sign OT Sean Locklear.

Titans sign Jordan Babineaux.

Bengals sign TE Bo Scaife.

Jaguars re-sign TE Mercedes Lewis.

Saints in negotiations with DE Matt Roth.

WFAN reporting on the Saturday 5:40 pm update that Mason says he's a Jet.

Rex Ryan had said on Friday that Mason would have to leave money on the table to become a Jet.

There are only two pro teams I really care about, the Jets and the Mets, and I think it's remarkable that players are willing to re-structure their deals and/or sign for less to play for the Jets.

Considering the Jets' history before Rex, it's even more amazing.

The Jets NEEDED to get Mason done. This whole situation was really handled quite oddly.

Giants tough offseason continues tonight with news that Prime Amukamara has broken his foot tonight.

Eh. Mason might be finished. It's a good sign. But, I'm not sure what he has left.

I don't know about being finished. He had 800 yards last season and 1000 yards the previous 3.

I think you're seeing with the cap that teams do what they have to do to keep core players and then fill in the best they can.

The Jets have made a practice of signing older former star players at reduced rates and hoping they still have enough left to contribute (see LaDanian Tomlinson and Jason Taylor in the recent past). Plaxico and Mason are a continuation of this practice.

He's an upgrade on Cotchery.

I was skeptical at first too but it was mostly due to emotional attachment to Cotch. Mason's a better player.

Shaun Ellis' departure hurts more, since he's got the same long-term attachment thing going, and he's the best player we could put at his position. Cotchery wasn't.
