Not counting the futures contracts and coaching staff changes, begins with the reported re-signing of restricted free agent WR Patrick Turner:

Quote:
Jets reportedly signed WR Patrick Turner to a one-year contract.
Turner spent the majority of the 2011 season on the Jets' practice squad, catching two passes for 26 yards in five games. The former Dolphins third-rounder was scheduled to hit restricted free agency this offseason.

NYJetsCap.com goes as far as to add the figures to the cap page.

No surprise here:

Quote:
The Jets triggered another $7.5 million in guarantees for Santonio Holmes by keeping him on the roster the second day after the start of the 2012 league year waiver system.

The Jets had to place Holmes on waivers by Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. to avoid $15.25 million in total guarantees over the next two years. Holmes' locker room standing and strained relationship with Mark Sanchez suggest the Jets could end up sorely regretting the decision. Fixing the poisonous locker room is the team's top priority of the offseason.

:?

Quote:
Jets RT Wayne Hunter's $2.45 million base salary became guaranteed Wednesday because the team did not release him.
The Jets seemed to protect themselves in Hunter's 2011 contract by writing in a loophole to get out of the deal if they released him on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday of this week. It never happened. Hunter, 30, was a media whipping boy in his first season as a starter, and for good reason. Pro Football Focus graded Hunter as the fifth-worst offensive tackle in football. Considering his salary, Hunter figures to return as a starter in 2012.

Rich Cimini, the Jets beat reporter for ESPN New York, said on ESPN television that the Jets will not bring back Plaxico Burress.

So Day 1 of the "offseason" ensures that we bring back Santonio (the right call), Wayne Hunter (uhh, what?) and Patrick Turner (the guy who has the best paycheck:production ratio in the country).

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

BTW I missed it over the weekend, but Cimini wrote that after being rebuffed by Brian Daboll (Sparano's OC in Miami) for a QB Coach/Passing Game Coordinator position, Sparano wants Karl Dorrell, the former UCLA HC.

Rex apparently wants to keep Matt Cavanaugh, and who can argue with his results?

Here's the list of FAs:

Unrestricted:
Bryan Thomas
Sione Pouha
Jim Leonhard
LaDainian Tomlinson
Robert Turner
Kevin O'Connell
Mark Brunell
Plaxico Burress
Nick Folk
Brodney Pool
Donald Strickland

Restricted:
Marquice Cole
Jamaal Westerman
Aaron Maybin
Patrick Turner - already re-signed to 1-yr deal

Exclusive Rights:
Matthew Mulligan
Martin Tevaseu

The only UFA that needs to return is Pouha. I'd also like to see Robert Turner re-signed (health/contract terms permitting). His versatility as a 6th/7th OL was sorely missed last season. He also was effective when used as a tackle eligible in heavy formations. Having to use Mulligan in that role proved disastrous.

I'd like to see the remaining RFAs return. Cole is terrific on teams.

Pouha, RFA's and GTFO. That'd be my offseason mantra here.

Everyone knows my disdain for Eric Smith and Pat Turner, but Matt Mulligan may be worst use of a roster spot in the NFL. He's a TE who can't block or catch. And that would be one thing, but he gets flagged more times per play than anyone I've ever seen. He's not just a no-value-added guy, he, *literally*, subtracts value by being placed on the field.

He HAS to be a hell of a guy in the locker room.
