Will #Jets Quinton Coples exclusively be a hand-in-the-dirt D-lineman? Rex Ryan changed his tune from a week ago when he said that would be the case. Today he admitted there could be an additional role for the versatile Coples: "Could we stand him up from a rush position?" Ryan said on Friday. "Yes we can. He has that kind of ability.

Looks like Coples will play all over as expected.

In today's presser, Rex said Demario Davis reminds him of Ray Lewis in terms of his leadership and mannerisms and a young Bart Scott in terms of his talent on the football field.

Ray Lewis, Shaun Ellis, Calvin Johnson in this draft. Impressive.

How long til the Ganaway = Bettis and Allen = Rodney Harrison comps?

Rex is the Rich Coutinho of football coaches. Or maybe Coutinho is the Rex of whatever it is Coutinho's job is.

Not quite sure why that would be as expected.

Rex pretty much sold Coples as being different from Gholston BECAUSE he was going to be asked only to do what he was good at in college - playing down. He essentially said that while physically, they believe he COULD play OLB, he wouldn't, because that would be making the same mistake they made with Gholston.

He only played down, rotating inside and out, at the minicamp this week.

This is Rex talking, but by no means the "expected" outcome, I don't think. Notice he doesn't really say he's going to have him do that, simply remarking that he thinks Coples COULD do that if asked.

Jets sign their own Matt Cassell in the form of Matt Simms, who never played much in a windy, multi-stop college career.

He and WR Royce Pollard (Hawaii) seem to be the only reported "tryout" signings so far.

Fred Koloto, OL out of SJSU, was also signed.

Thanks.

Looks like he has experience at guard and tackle. Not very impressive measurables, though.

Back on the topic of RBs, and now with Joe Addai off the board to NE, Ryan Grant might be the best name out there. I believe NE had some interest in him.

Another name out there would be Tim Hightower, coming off an injury. Good receiver, still just 25. Has some fumbling issues, though.

Joey Clinkscales has made the much-rumored move to the Raides.

I know for a while this team was known for its aggressive drafting and all was well, but they have made way too many early-round, or otherwise talent evaluation blunders lately for me to rue the day the top decision maker involved leaves.

It is probably tough to run a good draft under Tannenbaum most years because he leaves you so little margin for error with his propensity to deal picks like candy, I should disclaim.

Kicking job is Brown's to lose, according to the Daily News. Good.

Westhoff also says in the article he wanted the Jets to draft a kicker and one in particular in mind and he was upset they didn't take him. Sounds like he's had enough of Folk. I hope that new contract has no guaranteed money in it, otherwise, sounds like another waste of money.

Also, another punter will be brought in aside from Baltz. McBriar anyone?

Joe McKnight:

Quote:
“I put on about 15 pounds. I was 197 at the end of last year,” said the more muscular third-year RB and the NFL’s defending kickoff-return leader. “I’m getting my strength right. I’m not a wide receiver, I’m a running back. I’m just continuing to work on my explosion.”

And, I asked, has the extra weight slowed him down at all? He smiled knowingly.

“From what the strength coach has told me, I’m just as fast as ever,” he said. “And I feel just as fast. But I feel stronger, too.”

Unusual quote on Wayne Hunter's job security from the new OL coach:

Quote:
"Until they ship him out of here or shoot me dead in my office, the guy's the starting right tackle," said DeGuglielmo.
