On why he's so effusive while management has issued lukewarm endorsements of Hunter: "I speak my piece to people in power. I don’t make those decisions, but I'm telling you, this guy has skills. If you find one out there better than that playing that position, bring him to me."
DeGuglielmo, who has Rex Ryan-like candor, also tweaked his predecessor, the well-respected Callahan.
"I'm not worried about the ghost of Bill Callahan," he said. "The difference between me and Bill: I have a Super Bowl ring, and he doesn't."
DeGuglielmo is a piece of work. His best line of the day came when he was asked to compare the current line to the one that ranked among the NFL's elite only two years ago.
"I’m not going to compare them to what they did two years ago," he said. "Two years ago, I was 230 pounds. Now, I’m 290. So, you could say, ‘Hey, Guges, used to look good in that suit.’ But right now I can’t put one leg into it. It doesn’t matter what I was like two years ago ... I fluctuate 60 here, 60 there. It’s like peeing in a pool. Nobody knows the difference."
Yeremiah Bell has been officially signed and apparently told he will start.
This is curious to me. It obviously knocks Rex-favorite Eric Smith into the specialist/situational role he is ONLY suited for, which is great, but I believe Bell is a complete coverage liability and is really more of an athletic linebacker than a CF-type safety. In other words, kind of a similar player to Laron Landry, and both similar (but better) players to Eric Smith. Not to mention Antonio Allen profiles similarly, I believe.
I wonder how they are going to handle passing downs and if someone like Josh Bush (there's no one else obvious on the roster) is going to play a pretty significant immediate role on 3rd downs. Also could see a lot more nickel packages with Kyle Wilson manned up on tight ends, perhaps, or even a bigger role for the supposed superior athletic Demario Davis right away, rather than simply being a backup for Bart?
Jets trade a conditional pick for Jeff Otah, the oft-injured former 1st round pick RT of the Carolina Panthers.
This is a pretty significant move. If he is remotely healthy, he is absolutely the starter, and a pretty good one, over Wayne Hunter.
Continues to make the decision to hold onto Hunter in February absolutely baffling, but I am glad Tanny appears to be admitting his huge blunder there. This could be big time news for the Sparano offense.
I'm guessing the conditional draft choice is based on the number of games Otah plays in (or percentage of snaps, I think is the correct way of contractually wording it). If he ends up getting hurt, I'm guessing the draft pick will basically be nothing of consequence. And if he stays healthy, we'll gladly give up a higher pick because Otah is a really good run blocker.
The conditons with the Otah trade are largely injury-related, and if he passes a physical the Panthers secure the pick.
"Otah is a beast," one general manager said. "He can be dominant. He has to stay on the field, and the knee is a concern, but when he's healthy there's not too many better."
