I think Sanchez is going to be very good so I have no problem with this.
But why pay him based on speculation when you didn't need to?
Would you pay Ruben Tejada to be one of top 10 SS's in the game right now? Maybe give Matt Harvey a long deal now because he looks like he's going to be good? That doesn't make sense, regardless of your prognostication. He wasn't a FA. As Greg Rosenthal and others said, "Hey Mark, sorry Santonio was mean and we briefly explored bringing in an all-time great; here's $40m." Huh?
All this does is lock you into Sanchez for at least another 2 years (depending upon how this thing is actually structured, could be more, especially if it was designed to help cap space this year) - and what if he stinks this year? Can't blame the system anymore.
This was designed strictly as a PR move, but with serious financial implications. And all they've done is get terrible PR from it so far, including Damien Woody killing Sanchez' reaction to the deal ("This shows I am the leader of this team" - really!?) this morning.
Ugghh. Not a good move. His play was atrocious last year and gave me little hope he will ever be a good QB. What do the Jets see here? Even if they think he has tremendous potential, why give him an extension? His deal before the extension was fine.

Really should have waited after next season if not a considerable amount of next season to give him such a deal. Even if they weren't going for a FA, I would have taken serious looks at possible Day 2 guys like Nick Foles and Kirk Cousins. I mean, they could still do that but it is not going to really match the window-dressing going on. I really think the team is over-estimating its offensive talent that desperately needs to be revamped and they need to make sure guys on the defense stay. Miami and Buffalo are going to get better and I think the Patriots still have a year in them to take the division.
Yes, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez will earn $20.5 million in guaranteed money in 2012 and 2013 as part of his new contract. The fact, however, that Sanchez already was due to earn $17.75 million over the next two seasons has prompted one league source to characterize the move as a “lipstick and powder” deal.
So he gets an additional $2.75M over the next 2 years and the whole sum guaranteed.
BUT
Quote:
For an extra $2.75 million, Sanchez gave the Jets three straight option years, allowing the team to keep him if he finally realizes his full potential — and to cut him without further investment after the 2013 season, the 2014 season, or the 2015 season.

The contract also could be called a glorified restructuring.

So we create a good amount of cap space for this season, pay him a little more the next two seasons, and still retain the right to cut him two seasons from now? Sounds like a good deal to me.
Call me crazy, but I would have let Pouha walk. Guy is a great player, but developing interior linemen is a specialty of Rex. I think we could have replaced him on the cheap and spent the coin elsewhere.
It is a good deal though. Pouha is arguably the 3rd best defensive player on the team.

That should not be the end of the OLB position, but I fear it might.
Westerman was not tendered and won't be back, Maybin was and will be back, and now Thomas. Still looking for that impact player out there, though.
Haven't seen Jets connected to many of the early FA visits so far, but they have reached out to Chad Henne (they won't get him now with the Sanchez commitment, though - no way to even fake a competition) and DREW STANTON at QB.
They are apparently interested in Brandon Meriweather, who stinks and is a terrible person, at safety. No thanks. Guys who can't crack the NE secondary really don't have a place here, and with the character/locker room things on the forefront, this is NOT a guy you want in here.
